things were starting to feel off again.
it was 6 pm by the time we got back from the police station. we filed a report on mike, and they promised they would find him as soon as they could. the sun had already set, the apartment filled with darkness as clay unlocked the door, stepping in, me standing right beside him. he walked in front, turning on the light and heading towards the kitchen. i felt extra paranoid now, jumping at a small creak in the floor as i walked towards the counter, shrinking away from something in the shadows in the living room, even though it was only a lamp.
clay took notice of this, but didn't mention it. he understood completely why i would be acting like this after everything that went down earlier that morning. i sat down in a stool, tapping my nails on the counter restlessly as clay pulled a box of mac n cheese from the cupboard, turning to me and holding up the box. "does macaroni sound good?" he asked with a smile, glancing to me, and then the box he held. he looked so adorable, his emerald eyes shining with an effort to make me feel safe here.
i nodded, standing up to grab a pot and large spoon. he filled up the pot with water as i turned the stove on, us working together to make our dinner. i laughed as he poured the noodles into the boiling water, him jumping back when one splashed just a little. he glanced at me with a small wheeze, leaning back on the counter behind him. he looked tired, his dark blonde hair ruffled up all messy, his face relaxed drowsily.
i shuffled up to him, wrapping my arms around his torso. he hugged me back, rubbing the back of my head with his hand. it was then that i remembered the kiss last night, heat returning to my cheeks at the thought. neither of us had mentioned it ever since the incident this morning, being far too distracted to even think about it. i lifted my head, looking up at him. he looked back, his gaze full of a comforting, loving look. i couldn't help but smile, i was so happy with him.
"clay?" i started, him humming a response, "clay, i really like you." i said softly, feeling embarrassed at my own words. he just chuckled in response, lifting my chin, "y/n, i like you too." he said through a smile, leaning down and planting a kiss on my lips. it only lasted a few seconds, however the cool mint of his breath meeting my warm lips made the moment feel perfect. he leaned back, us both staring into each other's eyes in a daze. the timer went off, snapping us out of it.
he wheezed, reaching for the pot and scooping some into his bowl, handing me my bowl and spoon to get some as well. instead of sitting down at the counter however, clay wrapped an arm around my shoulder and led me to the couch, grabbing the remote and a blanket. i sat down criss-cross as clay placed the blanket over our laps, turning on the tv. "what movie would you like to watch? your pick." he said through a smile, his eyes sparkling as he gazed at me. i giggled, immediately going to the lion king.
we ate as the movie played, enjoying every bit of the moment. i finished eating a little after him, and he took my bowl and placed it on the coffee table for me, leaning back into the couch and wrapping his arms around me so that i was comfortably tucked against his chest, the blanket weighing down on the both of us in a comforting warmth. as we watched the movie, i couldn't help but smile. everything felt so perfect with him, ever since the beginning. i could always count on clay.
i had my head leaned into his chest the whole movie, playing with the strings of his hoodie.. something rattled at the door.
i froze, my limbs tensing up. clay leaned forward, pausing the movie and glancing down at me to make sure i was okay. "it's probably just someone walking past, it's okay." he told me, rubbing my shoulder reassuringly. i shouldn't have been so paranoid, there's noises all the time since we did live in an apartment complex.
i let out the breath i was holding, giving clay a nod, however i kept glancing at the door down the hall, trying to block out the ever growing anxiety in my stomach. clay kept me calm though, he pulled me closer to him, wrapping his arm over my shoulders and playing with a piece of my hair. the movie continued to play, however i couldn't shake the horrible feeling from my gut that someone was out there.
normally, i would've been fast asleep by now, as i always fall asleep near the ends of movies; however, that was not the case. the movie ended, but i still sat, wide awake, slightly jumpy at every small noise. clay noticed this, and leaned forward from the couch, turning to face me completely. he grabbed my hands, giving them a squeeze and looking up at me. "y/n, we're going to be okay. nothing can get to us, i'm sure we scared him off either way, okay?" he leaned closer, "the police could've found him by now if anything, you're just going to have to stay calm. do you want to sleep in my room-" he paused, biting his lip for a second before continuing, "-you know, if it'll help you feel less scared?"
i smiled, trying my best to show him that i was okay. i've wanted more than anything to be close to him, he was the only thing that kept me from freaking out during all of this, so of course, i gave him a nod of acceptance. he stood to his feet, grabbing the bowls and headed to the kitchen.
i turned down the hall, throwing on a comfortable shirt and sweats, and heading to his room to sit and scroll through my phone for a bit. i glanced up as he stepped in the room, trying to avoid contact as he changed from one shirt to another. i couldn't help but look up when he took off his shirt however, his muscles rippling along his back. i quickly shifted my gaze back down to my phone as he turned towards me, crawling into his sheets. i threw my phone onto the floor, rolling over to face him.
he gave me a soft smile, reaching over to turn off the light. "sleep well, everything is going to feel better by the morning." he whispered to me gently, pulling the blankets over the both of us. i murmured a grateful response, rolling over closer to him.
however, as we drifted off, i still couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen.
