The Final Chapter Part II

I was walked into the office, and saw Kairi, Robert, and Mattia all sitting in chairs, waiting to be questioned. On the car ride home, Kairi and I discussed what we'd say, and make sure we had alibis for ourselves, but I couldn't help but think that it wouldn't work. I sat in an office chair, tapping my foot nervously. I was just waiting for my name to be called. Waiting for my life to fall apart.

"Tara Sanchez, we'd like to see you now." A cop signaled me into the office. 

I sat down, facing a detective.

"Where were you three days ago, at around 4pm." The detective asked.

"I was with my friend, Kairi. We were going for a walk together." I said, taking a sip from the cup of water the detective gave me.

"Did you guys happen to go to the woods behind the school?" The detective asked.

"Yes." I know it may sound stupid to admit to going to the woods, but we had to make our story as believable as possible.

"Not many people know this yet, but we found Alejandro's body floating down the river adjacent to the woods." My heart sank. "We'd appreciate if you didn't tell anyone until we release an official statement. We're sorry about your friend, but you're currently on our list of suspects." Holy fuck. I didn't know how I was gonna get away with this. I wasn't.

"Please go back outside and wait." I went back outside and looked Kairi in the eye, attempting to send a look that tells him what's going on. He went in next. One by one we all went in, and one by one, we were all added to the suspect list. Besides Joseph.

"You're good to go," a cop said to Joseph and Robert. "The rest of you need to come down to the station for further questioning." We all turned looking at each other.

"What the fuck is going on?" Mattia said.

"Well one of us killed Alejandro and it wasn't me." Kairi said.

"It wasn't me either," I responded.

"Really? You guys think I'd kill my best friend?" He said. Kairi and I just looked at him. "This is bullshit. I really expected more from you guys, especially Tara." He got up and walked into the hallway.

"What the fuck are we gonna do?" I turned to Kairi.

"They found him in a fucking lake," he whispered. "Did you really try to hide his body in a lake?"

"Do you really think I'm that stupid?"

"No, but I didn't put him there."

"Me neither." I then remembered the group of people walking towards me after I killed him. "Wait, Kairi. I just remembered something."

"What?" He turned to me.

"After it happened, I heard these guys walking towards me."

"Fuck, Tara, did they see you?" 

"I don't think so."

"Tara, I'm not about to help you cover this shit up if you're just gonna end up getting caught." I was fucked. I knew I was fucked. There was no way I could get away with this. I got up and walked into the hallway to see Mattia leaning against a wall, looking down at his phone.

"Hey. You know I don't think you killed him, right?" I reassured him.

"I know, it's just, I still can't process the fact that my best friend is dead." Those words coming from his mouth infuriated me. The fact that he still cared so much about Alejandro, especially after what he did to me. "I was in the woods when he died. That's why I'm on the suspect list."

"Why were you in the woods?" I asked. Could he have seen me kill Alejandro? God, I hope not.

"I was with Hunter, we got high and then decided to go for a walk. I didn't even see anyone else there." Then I realized something. I realized how I could get away with this, but I'd have to sacrifice the person I loved more than anyone.

"We're taking you down to the station now," The cop signaled Mattia and me to follow him. 

"Hey, don't worry, everything is gonna be okay." Mattia reassured me with his hand on my cheek.

I sat in the back of the cop car with Kairi and Mattia. I texted Kairi.

"i have an idea." I texted Kairi, angling my phone away from Mattia so he couldn't see.

"oh god, what?" He responded.

"we have to frame mattia."

"wait are u serious??"

"yea. just say you saw him." As much as I didn't want to do this, it was the only way to save myself.

I walked into the dark office with a small dim lamp lighting the area around the table. I sat down in the metal chair, facing the same detective I talked to at the school.

"So what were you doing in the woods on Sunday?" She asked.

"I was with my friend, Kairi, on a walk, like I told you."

"Did you see anything suspicious?" She asked.

"Yeah." I gulped. I knew exactly what I had to say, but I didn't wanna say it. "As Kairi and me were leaving, I saw someone running out of the woods."

"Could you see who?" 

"Yes. It was Mattia Polibio."

"Thank you Tara, that's all we needed to know." A cop walked me out of the dark room while another one brought in Kairi. I was praying that Kairi would stick to the story.

And he did.

I sat in the police department next to Mattia in silence. I didn't know how I could talk to him after what I did.

"Mattia Polibio, you are under arrest for the murder of Alejandro Rosario." A cop said, grabbing him and putting handcuffs on him.

He looked at me, and said the last words I ever heard from him, "I loved you."
