Mina
I can't move from where I'm standing. Jordan looks at me with a seriousness I've never seen in him before, yet I can decipher his gaze and it even seems that his voice echoes in my mind: "Where the hell have you been? Why don't you tell me anything? Do you have any idea how worried I was?"
—Mina, what happened to you? What is...? —Nick breaks the silence and points to the parchment I'm inertitiously hiding behind my back.
—Nothing. I just fell —I think about the stupid thing I just made up and try to fix it—, when I was going to sit down to wait for you, I didn't realise there was a rock that was blocking the path, so I stepped on it and ended up being dragged by the current to the swimming limit and, instead of turning back, I decided to explore, I've never gone that far before. Besides, this thing in my hand is just a dirty piece of paper I found in a bottle and I decided to take it out to see what it was. —I throw the parchment into the water and feel completely and truly stupid, the boys stare at me, not very convinced of what I just told them, but now it's Jordan who talks to me.
—Okay, let's go —he reaches over to me and grabs my arm and pulls me down the rock, I groan, but he doesn't seem to mind. Your parents are worried.
—Jordan, leave her alone. You're hurting her —Nick takes my backpack and slings it over his shoulder, I take advantage of Jordan's glance to get out of his grip.
—I'm not leaving, I have to get my necklace, I dropped it when I threw the parchment. —I turn to see where I threw the parchment a few moments ago and my impatience, at this rate, will have been carried away by the current—. Besides, you were annoyed with me, so I ask you most politely to go away and leave me with Nick —I take off my clothes again and I see both boys tense up—. If you don't mind, take care of that —I say to Nick before jumping back down with a lot of fear, because down below, there are only rocks and I might fall very, very badly.
Jordan
I signal to Nick and we both start to take off our clothes, we'll be idiots if we jump from here without getting some momentum, we go to the start of the gully plain and run for a dive, but not before I hear Nick shout at me.
—Let's hope she fell near the rocks and not on them! —I sigh and we fall off the dive. We both hold our breath and start looking everywhere for Mina, behind a rock, I see a tail, but not of a fish, no, I'd recognise it anywhere, but now it's a different colour, I point and Nick nods, but then his eyes widen and he denies outright. We come up for air.
—No way I'm going after that thing.
—It's not like we have a choice, I might have Mina —I say and want to dive back in when Nick grabs my arm.
—Do you hear that? —I deny and sharpen my hearing. I manage to hear a faint, sweet voice. It sounds familiar to me and to Nick, but it doesn't take long before we start to lose consciousness. Trying to reach the shore again and before I fall into a deep sleep, a blurred memory of a castle and a beautiful city comes to mind.
