Nick
After what happened a few moments ago in the museum, the staff has asked us in the most attentive way to evacuate the place, as it seems to have suffered structural damage, especially the aquatic area. Getting Mina out of the state of shock she is in is the hardest part, we are on a bench we found free in front of the skating area in the mall, while I sit next to her and try to comfort her, Josh is squatting in front of her, gently resting his hands on her knees, she is with her head down, holding her head with her hands on both sides and resting her elbows on her legs. In the distance, Jordan is talking to her mother to come and pick her up, I see her hang up with a nod and that's when she comes back to her friend, sitting on the opposite side from me.
—Mina —he speaks to her gently, and I look down on him— you need to calm down, none of us here have ever witnessed a mermaid before. At least not a real one.
—She saw me, Jordan. Of all people, she saw me and spoke to me —I can't make out her tone of voice, Jordan sees her worried and pulls her in for a hug, she doesn't resist and hugs him back, hiding her face in the crook of his neck. Josh and I turn to look at each other indignantly, all this time, we wanted to do the same thing and she didn't even move. Jordan strokes her hair with one hand and presses a kiss to the top of her head.
—I know. I don't understand why that happened —he says and turns to look at us, Josh looks worried and scared too, considering his fear of the sea. I look Jordan in the eyes and he smirks at me without Mina noticing. I just say to him with a twitch of my lips:
—"You were supposed to help me" —I reproach and he widens his smile, pulling Mina tighter against him, but she pulls away and I want to laugh, but I manage to hold back.
Jordan
When Mina breaks away, I straighten my jacket. I've managed to get on Nick's nerves and that's what counts. Mina is my friend, almost a sister to me, I would never see her any other way.
—Is Mina's mother coming? —Josh asks me and she looks up, looking quickly at all of us, stopping her doubtful expression on me.
—Yes, she won't be long. I guess in about fifteen minutes.
—I don't want to go home —she replies and I look amused.
—Then you'll go to the party and forget about today —she grimaces and my friends smile.
—No... No, of course not, it's not that easy to forget about something like that. But I don't want to go home either. —She looks at me defiantly— I want answers, I want to see that mermaidagain.
I sigh heavily and scratch the back of my neck, looking for an answer that doesn't come from me, but from Josh.
—Impossible, Mins. The museum is closed until further notice, besides, that creature can be dangerous, I guess they're closing the beach to the public too.
