The day had been a dull and ordinary thing, with the only activity available being studying for her level 6 midterms. At least, the day had been dull and ordinary, right up until a surprise visitor had showed up on Havenfield's doorstep, to be met by a pleasantly surprised Edaline. A visitor who Sophie never got to see anymore, as he was now in the elite levels at Foxfire. A visitor that happened to have beautiful ice blue eyes and tousled blonde hair. A visitor that had greeted her with his infamous smirk, which turned immediately into a frown when he saw the bags under eyes, and the slight crease between her eyebrows.
"Hey Foster." Keefe told her, sidestepping past her to enter her enormous room. "Surprised to see me?"
She rolled her eyes, though she was secretly trying not to smile. "Yes actually. It's almost midterms, and if I as a level 6 have this much studying to do, you should have twice as much." She raised her eyebrows at him as he plopped down at her desk, which was piled high with studying material for all of her different subjects at Foxfire.
Keefe turned his chair around so that he faced her, tilting his head to study her as he replied. "Very true. But I have something better to do."
Sophie sat down on the edge of her canopied bed and crossed her arms, giving Keefe a joking glare. "And what might that be?" She asked, though from the mischievous twinkle in Keefe's eyes, she thought that she might be able to guess.
"Bothering you." He grinned evilly. "And now that I have accomplished that mission, my new purpose in life is to convince you to come with me and force Fitz and Biana to play base quest."
Sophie rolled her eyes, but felt the corner of her lips twitch with a flash of a smile. "Yeah, that is soooo not happening."
"And why is that? Do you really think that I wouldn't be able to convince you?" Keefe pondered, stoking an imaginary goatee for dramatic effect.
That time Sophie's lips truly did crack into a smile. "Maybe. But we both know that Fitz and Biana are probably doing the responsible thing and actually studying for a test that we have to pass in order to stay in Foxfire."
Keefe shook his head, his grin transforming into a smug smirk as he said; "Oh but Foster, you're forgetting one thing..." He paused, pointing to his head, and then to hers, before continuing, "We have photographic memories, and they don't, so we basically have a guarantied pass ahead of us. So even if they can't play base quest, we could always play one on one!"
Sophie was about to protest and go back to studying, when she saw the pleading look in his eyes. She had thought he was just joking, but... She thought back to the month that took place after they had defeated the Neverseen. The strange feeling that there was nothing to do, no mysterious plans to figure out. She had been restless. Back then, Keefe had pretended to be ok, but she knew him way to well for his, "I'm fines" to convince her. But then he had started the elite levels, and she hadn't seen him for over a year, except for during group gatherings, where she couldn't talk to him privately. But now, it seemed he had finally become desperate enough to come and talk to her, though he had disguised it as a, "I've come to annoy you" visit. So, she caved.
"Fine." Keefe eyes lit up, and he looked like he was about to jump for joy, before she held up her hand in the universal stop sign. "Wait. First, I need to ask you one thing. You don't have to answer yet if you don't want to, but I just wanted to make sure that you know that you can always talk to me. So, here's my question," She paused, waiting for Keefe to make eye contact before she said, "Are you really ok?"
"Oh, how the tables have turned! Usually it would be me asking you that que-" He stopped when he noticed her glare. "Ok, ok. Trust me when I say that I'm fine. No don't roll your eyes at me, I'm serious!"
He stood up, and closed the distance between them, reaching for her hand. And this time, it was him who waited for her to meet his gaze. And when she did, she felt her heart go into hummingbird mode from the sheer intensity in his eyes.
"I. Am. Fine. A little restless yeah, but at the moment, especially now that I'm here..." He cleared his throat. "What I'm trying to say is, you don't have to worry about me. I know that worrying is like, your thing, and I appreciate that you thought of me, but you can stop your worrying now. Because it may be hard to believe, because for a while there everything felt hopeless but," he squeezed her hand, giving her a crooked smile, before he told her, "The Neverseen are gone. My mother is gone. We're safe. So yeah, I just want you to know, that when I say I'm fine, you can believe me."
For a second everything was silent and still, as they both gazed into each others eyes. And then, Sophie threw her arms around him, burying her head in his chest. At first Keefe was stiff, his arms wrapped hesitantly around her waist. But when she hugged him the tiniest bit tighter, he sank into the hug, hugging her back just as fiercely.
"So, do you believe me?" Keefe mumbled into her hair.
Without a hint of doubt in her voice, Sophie answered. "Yes."
"Thanks Foster."
Sophie knew that she should probably let go now, but she really didn't want to, and it seemed that Keefe felt the same. So, they stayed right there for a long while, Sophie counting Keefe's slow, rhythmic heartbeat, the sound calming her mind until there was nothing left, except for the feeling of belonging. The feeling of happiness. The feeling of-

AN: Thanks for reading this first one shot! Feel free to make suggestions on what the next one should be about, and if you have any constructive criticism to give, say it and I'll keep it in mind and try to apply it into my writing. Note that this is my first time writing something on wattpad, so I will probably make a million mistakes, so if any of you have any tips, please comment on this paragraph and tell me them, thanks!
Have a great day, and Happy Holidays!
PS. Ok, but I just have to quickly say, did anyone else want to scream and throw their book/phone across the room when they finished Unlocked? I mean, when I read the ending it made me cry harder than any other part of kotlc has. And I am one of those heartless people that don't cry at stuff that everyone seems to cry at, so the fact that I cried reading it means that it is very sad.
P.P.S. Also, any Ed Sheeran fans that are now streaming his new single "Afterglow" non stop? Because I definitely am.
