~Percy POV~
Something is lurking in the shadows. It's black and wickedly fast. I don't know what it is. I don't know what it wants. I've barely managed to catch a glimpse or two, for the good that's doing me. I warily crouch, Riptide in hand, although I know I won't have much chance if whatever it is decides to attack. There's a howl in the distance. Wolves. The black flash is back, and I can barely see the silhouette. It looks like a- the thing darts forward with a low growl and runs back to the treeline. I feel pain on my shoulder. The thing bit me! "Holy schi-!" and the world goes black.
Flashback
It was a Saturday morning, and the sun was streaming through my window. I yawned and stretched before dragging myself out of bed to go meet my Wise Girl, the love of my life. We had been spending a lot of time together after the giant war, just three months before. I walked down to the dining pavilion to eat my breakfast, blue waffles with a boatload (see what I did there 😏) of maple syrup. While it kinda stinks having to sit all alone - hey, I'm a social guy - I was used to it by now. Annabeth wasn't there yet but I didn't think much of it, she probably stayed up late working on her drawings of Olympus or Capture the Flag strategies. If only I knew then just how wrong I was. I decided to walk along the beach before my sword fighting classes when I saw a couple sitting there making out on the beach. Ewww, but oh well, not like I can really talk. There were a couple of Aphrodite girls watching them from the bushes, some were crying while others were pointing and giggling, although that was only to be expected. I took another look at the couple. The boy was blond and very pale, ugh, it was Matthew, an annoying - and very stuck up - son of Zeus. I hated his guts, as he was arrogant, a jerk to everyone, and quite scrawny, he couldn't run from two dracaena. The girl was blond, probably an Athena kid, but I couldn't see her face. I shrugged it off and kept walking, getting close enough to hear them as they finally broke apart.
"When are you going to break up with him Annabeth?" I froze.
It's probably a different Annabeth. There are probably plenty of Annabeth's in this camp with blond hair. Annabeth wouldn't cheat on me. Not in a million years, so why did that girl look so familiar? I sprinted closer.
"I'll do it tonight, at the campfire. I never loved that sea scum anyway." I felt numb.
It had to be a-a trick, or a spell, or... charmspeak! That's it, the Aphrodite girls charm spoke them! Annabeth would never do this on her own. There was a small twinge of doubt in the back of my mind, but I pushed it away, we were soulmates, she was my Wise Girl, the love of my life! I walked up to them.
"What do you want, Jackson?" Matthew spat, for some reason that kid has hated my guts ever since he got here.
The girl looked up, "A-Annabeth," I stuttered, I couldn't believe it, she cheated on me, and with Matthew of all people, "how could you?"
"Percy I-"
"Save it!" I yelled angrily, and the lake churned from my anger.
"Percy, please I-"
"Does he make you happy?" I asked, although it physically pained me to say, "do you love him?"
"More than she ever loved you!" Matthew sneered, and then kissed her.
I stormed away, tears streaming down my face. I can't deal with this right now, I'm gonna go visit Mom and Paul. I ran into my cabin, threw all my stuff into a small duffel bag, slammed the door, and left. I jogged back to New York, which should have been nearly impossible, but being a former bearer of Achilles' curse and a survivor of Tar- that place, has some definite advantages, one of them being greatly increased strength and stamina. I went to my apartment building and was about to walk into the lobby when a policeman stopped me.
