Ashley walked out of her house, and saw Amal's mom waiting for her.

Every morning, since the beginning of 6th grade, Amal's mom had driven her to middle school. It wasn't as if it was only her and Amal in the car - a few of their other friends enjoyed the ride also - but Ashley felt a connection just being close to him. Sure, the two had been friends for a long time, but with Amal, every day brought something new, something unexpected. To be completely honest with herself, she just wanted to be with him, to live life as he did...

Ashley's thoughts were cut short as she entered the van, where she saw Amal sitting in the back. She offered him a shy smile, betraying nothing of how she really felt when she looked at him. And - she could have sworn - did he blush? But no, it had to have been her imagination. After all, Amal was so spontaneous. Long-term relationships weren't really his thing...

"Hey," he said, in the same casual, laid-back way that he always did, and the smile on his face melted Ashley's heart. The sudden rush of affection brought color to her face, and she hoped that it was still too dark outside for him to see her blush. "Sean isn't here today. Want to sit with me?"

Sean Singh, a mutual friend, usually sat in the back of the van with Amal. They always talked about some game, like "Clash of Clans," which Ashley was never really interested in.

She knew it was going to be a risk to sit with Amal. But, Ashley thought, it wasn't as though he could see her feelings. And why would she refuse him, when that was the last thing that she wanted to do?

"Sure," she told him, in a casual way, one that concealed everything. "Why not?"
