As with all things writing, I find my mind sometimes wanders into the strangest of situations. Characters pop into my mind doing the oddest things. Today it was the turn of Santa, reimagined for a Fantasy world with a little help from some old characters from past games of Dungeons and Dragons. Merry Christmas to all!

Brief Description Draken Slayer is a dark fantasy fiction short story, part of the Shadows of Illyria: Tales from the Realm Series. Written by author JM VanZuiden, the Shadows of Illyria Series is a unique twist on fantasy fiction, incorporating his real-world combat experience into the characters and events of an epic fantasy world. Draken Slayer is told a flashback suffered by the main character of the Shadows of Illyria series of novels, Aldric. In his nightmare, he relives his a life-changing event from the past where his unit was tasked hunting a pack of dangerous Draken (dragons), and experience the inglorious thrill and devastation of real combat, and the loss that comes with it. Context of This Tale The Draken Slayer is taken from my full-length fantasy novel; Shadows of Illyria: Phantoms of War, being published June 5, 2017. Within this novel, the following story exists as a single chapter in the manuscript (Over 450 pages). In the novel, one of the lead characters is a grizzled veteran of war and currently a Captain in the Imperial Legion. Throughout the book, events happening in the present, trigger flashbacks told as short dreams. The dreams not only weave a tale and are relevant to the events happening in this fantasy world, but also express the very real and dark feelings that combat vets suffer from in the real world. Draken Slayer is by far the longest of those dreams, also taking place farther back in his memory than the others. It is a critical event in his life, being the first time Aldric experiences the loss of a friend in combat, and entirely unique from the other nightmares, making it a fitting candidate as a short story on its own merit.

My Father and Grandfather were burned to a crisp a few days ago by the lovely dragon, Kindralth The Red, in tradition no doubt. Managed by @liz_in_astris "I grieve and dare not show my discontent, I love and yet am forced to seem to hate, I do, yet dare not say I ever meant, I seem stark mute but inwardly do prate. I am and not, I freeze and yet am burned, Since from myself another self I turned. My care is like my shadow in the sun, Follows me flying, flies when I pursue it, Stands and lies by me, doth what I have done." (Elizabeth I)

A man of half dragon, half humanoid descent, burdened by a mysterious and unyielding illness, disabled and unable to transform or soar as once he did, unable to do anything that should be his due as someone with dragon heritage, has lived a long life, isolated, reclusive and in pain. When, after centuries of hoping, a cure for his enduring troubles is proposed, Aindrith initially feels an intense relief that his suffering may be over, only to realise that choosing to take the offered cure may leave him in a much worse position than his illness ever has. This short story follows vaguely on from the discovery of pattern activity in Kelly's trauma. It takes place around the year 2100, after Tal has become a Hilrean priest, and twenty five years after professor Raffy, professor Rintargodash's husband, died of old age. Professor Kelly has been university dean for one hundred and thirty years. The genetic biology professor in the story, Florence Betsydatter, is the same one who approximately half a century earlier first identified talan genetics in Tal and his young ward, Belinda, but at the time of this story, the name 'talan' has not yet been rediscovered.

For the month of December, several objects of power take the center stage as always. Blood of Ivory is a collection of stories revolving around the powerful, legendary, and prophesied items popular in fantasy media. Within this anthology, you can find stories that feature a central thing or person in which the plot and/or the characters revolve around. Tales of the lengths people go to in order to achieve these objects are welcome. Prices to pay, ancient curses, treasure hunts, and political maneuvers-these elements to create a hair-raising adventure filled with high-stakes, charged tension, and, as a cherry on top, a well-timed betrayal. Pull the sword from the stone, craft the cursed amulet, and unearth the hidden treasure trove. Together, we will usher in a new age of power and riches.
