Aphira had met the dragons when she was very young with her Mother and her brother, Whip. However, she didn't remember it, and not even the stories that her Mother told in vivid detail stirred her memory. But when one day, suddenly several beasts with wings land in the village, and several New Berkians announce that the dragons have returned, Aphira is tugged two ways: To follow in her Mother's footsteps, or to try to find a way to escape the dragon-filled life her Mother once lived. Whip was always fascinated by the stories of the dragons, and unlike his older sister, he remembered his first meeting with the dragons. But when a shocking secret is revealed about his identity and Aphira starts to stray farther and farther away from the life that Whip longs to live, he's tugged in more directions than he could ever imagine were possible...between his sister, himself...and the dragon that his Mother seems to want him to be. As the children of Kiara and Dagur are pulled further apart while the other children of the Riders are bonded closer together, they start to miss the real threat that only Aphira knows are on their borders...the threat that she might choose to side with to survive. Notice: This is a prequel of my first dedicated HTTYD Fanfiction: Howling Echoes. Please read that before reading this to understand some parts of the plot. Notice 2: Half of the characters are owned by Dreamworks! Some of them I made up. Notice 3: If you read Howling Echoes and got REALLY attached to Whiplash, well...you're gonna wanna read this.

She felt the cold, hypnotizing gaze burrow deep in her soul, as though it was running through thoughts and memories and everything she knew about herself and more. Crystal shapes formed like frost at the edge of the creature's eyes, and its long, slender tail was wrapped around her, with two thin fins gently brushing against her arms. Every instinct in her body was telling her to run. Her instincts shrieked at her, begging for her to run, but still she couldn't move, even as the creature blew a small puff of frost into her face, adding to the numbing cold and revealing gleaming, small, sharp white teeth. An icy gaze pinned me in place. But, no matter how brilliant the dragon looked, shining like ice and snow in the crisp morning, she couldn't help but think one thought. She was gonna die. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Kiara lived on her own for as long as she could remember. She survived using nothing but her own skills and instincts, and never needed anyone else. At least, not until the Dragon Riders came. The Dragon Riders took her away from her isolated life and filled it with people and socialization - things she was in no way familiar with. But as she finds her family and fate intertwined with the Dragon Riders and the Hunters they fought, it became clearer and clearer to Kiara that she couldn't just leave - and she needed to decide which future she wanted, before it was too late to choose.

I could feel a cold, icy gaze barrel straight through my soul. Actual crystal shapes frosted white marked the edges of the creature's vision. A long, thin tail with a thin frost layer gently wrapped around me. Normally I would've run, escape through the trees to the best of my abilities. But I couldn't. The icy blue gaze was hypnotizing. The dragon gently puffed frost in my face. Small, gleaming white teeth caught the snow. No matter how brilliant this dragon looked, however, I couldn't fight back the only other thought that was running through my head. I was gonna die. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kiara has lived on her own for as long as she can remember. But when she finds her fate caught with the Dragon Riders, secrets are uncovered about her identity, and she has to choose between fighting her father...or facing the only friends she'd ever known in battle. Secrets, betrayal, and lies, all circling Kiara's life as she struggles to fit in with the Riders, and find where her fate truly stands. OLD: While I'm very proud for this being my first completed major project, it's still old as hell, several things make 0 sense and there's a lot of random convoluted stuff and little consistency, especially in characters. This was something I wrote to escape when I was down and often sleep-deprived so I just wrote what I felt like in the moment. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO ITS SEQUELS. If that isn't your thing, I wouldn't recommend this.
