Stories do not care for our maps, nor do they end where we plant our flags. We cross this cruel land learning only one true lesson: that everything we love is merely borrowed. The valley swallows men whole. The winter steals the green from the earth. Great houses grow silent, and names we once whispered in the dark dissolve into nothing but memories, the only territory where the dead are still allowed to walk. Perhaps that is why grief, as sharp and biting as a north wind, eventually feels like an old friend. There is a terrible mercy in its certainty. The ground does not bargain, and the soil does not give back what it takes. Once the spark has left a man, your only task is to learn how to carry the heavy, hollow ache he left behind. But every now and then, the world breaks its own laws. Sometimes, what the earth claimed does not stay buried. A face you surrendered to memory suddenly stands before you, breathing beneath the very same sun. Yet, after years spent learning how to breathe around their absence, their return does not feel like a miracle. It feels like a phantom, too cruel to trust and too real to deny. There are ghosts we weep for because they are gone, and then there are the ones who trail dust into the parlor and come home. We like to think the trail is the great test of a soul. Perhaps we are wrong. The hardest part isn't surviving the crossing. It is learning how to live after the world has taught you only how to survive. And perhaps, at last, Kayce Dutton will learn the one thing he has never known how to do: let go. - Triggers warnings. - Trauma - PTSD - Violence - Blood - Murder - Eventual sexual content - Torture I do not own Yellowstone/Marshals or its original characters. I only own my original characters and storyline.

Maybe I was destined to be doomed. I didn't know it would take this long. He should've died then and there. And she should've minded her business. But neither of them did as they were told. And I wondered if anything would ever be fair in my life. I had walked for what felt like 800 miles. But it wasn't that much. But I knew it was a while. I got to a part of town that I hadn't seen. I guess it was a long time for me to be walking, cause it was sunset. I had been walking since noon. It must've been about 6 o'clock, cause it's winter, and the sun is nowhere to be seen. I'm just glad I wasn't back in the woods again. The only few buildings I had seen was a gas station and a convenience store. There were two cars at the gas station, and one at the store. One of them was a truck, it didn't seem to have a driver in it yet. I don't want to sleep out here tonight, it'd be best to go however far I can in the bed of the truck, and then hop off when I need to. Whether that be getting caught or falling out, so be it. I'm desperate, homeless, cold, and I could've been an orphan. I should've anyway.

Sometimes home isn't a place. Sometimes it's the person who remembers you before you became someone else. Isabel left Montana at seventeen, leaving behind the ranch, the mountains, and the boy she'd loved long before either of them understood what love meant. Ten years later, she comes back. Kayce Dutton isn't the boy she remembers anymore. War changed him. Family changed him. Life changed him. But when he looks at her, he remembers exactly who he used to be. And maybe, after all these years, they're both finally ready to find their way home. - Β© velvetfaye 2026
