Dr. Stanislaus Pym has made two critical errors. He failed in his efforts to kill the last Dire Magnus, and then he lost track of the Keepers of the Books of Beginning as they were shuffled from orphanage to orphanage. When the Dire Magnus learns of his enemy's latest misstep, he plans to use it - and the Wibberlys ignorance of magic - to his advantage.
Meanwhile, Kate, Michael, and Emma are eking out a life for themselves in a small Baltimore apartment. Six months after aging out of the orphanage system and taking on legal guardianship of her brother and sister, Kate does all she can to protect and nurture her siblings. She wants to give them everything good in the world, but she's exhausting herself just to keep the cabinets stocked and a roof over their heads. When winter arrives, bringing with it a series of strange, hyper-realistic dreams, she is introduced to a green-eyed boy who offers her the help she desperately desires.
It also brings Kate, Michael, and Emma face to face with their magical, dangerous destiny, and a choice that could change the world.
