As his father is dying, Prince Luka of Rusyah is sent out into the world to find himself a wife. With no idea where to go, Luka follows the directions of a mysterious woman that he sees only in his dreams. She guides Luka to a legendary castle said to be inhabited by the demon Kashchei. Under her instructions, he steals a priceless Firebird from Kashchei, although he doesn't understand how it will help him find a wife. But by doing so, Luka inadvertently starts a war he doesn't understand with an enemy he never thought was real for a cause he's not sure he believes in. This is a retelling of The Firebird ballet.
