Doyle is a superhero - a low rate, third tier superhero. He's been slept on and pushed around his whole life. It gets so bad that he eventually gets to a place where even he begins to disbelieve his worth. This causes him to spiral out into a self destructive pattern that leaves him in poverty, squandering all of his money on gambling... and other things. One day, while he's running from some super thugs to avoid getting beat up for not paying back his debts, he accidentally stumbles upon Javan, a nefarious super villain's secret lair. He overhears Javan's plot to change the world order, and make all the supers mundane and vows to stop him, hoping that he can thwart his plans and drink the potion himself to become a more powerful super so that people will respect him and he won't get pushed around anymore. He goes around, making a fool of himself and messing up big time, but along the way he, begins to open his eyes in a sense, and learn more about the world he's in, and himself.
