In the Filipino town of Santa Crusiana, a young man named Leonor marries a woman whose head has been torn off from an old photo. Within the Seguismundo family, headed by the stern patriarch Don Julian, such interclass unions are strictly forbidden.

Far off years, amidst her grief over the loss of her grandmother, Alma returns to her hometown of Santa Crusiana. On the eve of Dia de los Muertos, a solemn Filipino holiday honoring the departed, Alma engages in a prayer ritual while holding a flickering candle. Desperate to unearth the truth, Alma finds herself in the stunning yet oppressive period of Spanish colonialism.

After meeting a charming trickster, Esperanza Kahabagan, she is guided by her ethereal presence. Together, the two new friends embark on a remarkable journey to unlock the forbidden love that Leonor dared to pursue, resulting in the torn photograph.
