In the city of Vaesiris, every eighteen years, commence the Trials. A thousand-year-old tradition that has been practiced since the beginning of the Mortal Age. The tests are designed to ensure the strongest queen sits on the Vaesirian throne. For seventeen years the revered High Witch, Queen Aeve has ruled. But her reign is coming to a close.

Designated from birth, twelve Ladies have been raised together knowing one of them would win the Trials and join a long history of powerful queens. All it will take is three tests to determine who is worthy of the gifts and powers of the High Mother. Three tests to determine which of them will live past their eighteenth year.
