It's five years after Breaking Dawn. The Cullens are living in New Hampshire. Renesmee is physically nine or ten.
Life couldn't be more peaceful. However not to Renesmee. Jacob is still in Forks/La Push and without him she has no friends.
Even with him she had no normal human friends, and she probably never would.

When Alice, Jasper, and Carlisle discover a newborn from another dimension with the power to turn herself human Renesmee is excited.
