In the late twenty-second century Humans have reached the stars, and they are not the first.
Ancient technology has literally propelled them into the galaxy, and they find themselves far from alone.
Three civilisations, more advanced by millennia, rule vast areas of space by cooperating with each other as the all-powerful Citadel. There are many other, less powerful species; Humanity is forced to join their ranks, low in the pecking order.
As they explore and colonise new worlds, the Systems Alliance of Humans encounter the Batarians. Skirmishes ensue, avoiding an all-out war that might draw the attention of the Citadel. On a frontier colony, tragedy strikes time and again.
Growing up knowing little else, eager to avenge a mother's death at the hands of Batarians, a youngster's journey begins to "be all they can be". But that may be something other than Human - and the shadow that falls across all of the Systems Alliance may be from within as well as without.

This is the story of Sam Tarot, becoming an agent of the Systems Alliance Special Operations - on a mission to defend Humanity against all enemies.
