After the overthrowing of its monarchy, authoritarian rule is established in the nation, Aeonian, in the year 2185. Deemed "The Taking" by citizens, the event lasted for 45 days and consisted of children being forcibly taken from their parents and put in homes under the watchful eye of a caregiver to ensure they grow up to what the government considers the best versions of themselves. 16 and 19 year olds, Elizabeth and Mary Woods, were able to escape after being hidden during the chaos as small children. They were eventually found by a widow whose children had been stolen during the event. Their quiet and secret life of freedom in the countryside is threatened though when their identity is mistakenly found out by a soldier of the government. Told by their adoptive mother to find a group of rebels for safety, Mary and Elizabeth run as the government begins a campaign to find them while also fighting to escape indoctrination and to discover the rebels.
