Alden Jackson believes that Calamity, Oregon, is the most boring place on Earth: so boring there that the people in town have a dreaded Halloween ritual of sending eighteen year-olds off into a local haunted house for a good night’s scare. And scare is exactly what Alden gets – with some unintended consequences.
The moment he enters the haunted house, a twisted turn of events – including hungry ghosts, a vampire attack, and a Zombie Chicken rising from the dead – ends up with Alden’s enormous magic powers springing into action for the first time, transforming the whole town into a place fit for monsters. Knowing that the monsters will spread, Alden has no choice but to delve into the town’s magical secrets, catch up quickly with the magic world, and clean up the supernatural mess he made.
But Alden isn’t alone in his plight. Calamity, as it turns out, has been the sanctuary for magic users for centuries, and all hands are on deck to rid the town of monsters and return Calamity’s centuries of peace.
