It's the 21st century... The status quo believes that carbon dioxide causes CATASTROPHIC global warming. Galileo is "pulled" out of the sixteenth century and put on the stand. Armed with science he goes against the status quo. Would you burn Galileo? What would happen if Galileo were alive today? What happens when you oppose the holy brotherhood of climate model experts and the crowd of deluded citizens who believe the numbers predicted by the computer models? Would he survive Western Civilization and the Politically Correct Thought Police? This SHORT STORY is a brisk and refreshing walk through the Socratic Method

We live in a very special time, perhaps a hinge in human history. We could argue that today, for the first time, we are realizing the dreams of the Enlightenment. The scientific method has produced enough objective knowledge that we are able to develop tools enabling us tinker with nature, to mimic and substitute nature. Technology underpins the unique power we have developed to use, and act on, Nature by our designs and choices. We could start working to reverse human footprint in the environment and global climate. However, we also live unique political and sociological times marked by a general feeling of distrust in science and scholarly expertise in any technical field, and more generally by an anti-establishment feeling. These are times of tribalism, relative truths, and false news. So precisely when technology has brought us to the unfolding of the tragedy of the global commons, it appears that there are no chances to develop the instruments to act. These are, therefore, very special times indeed since the will to recognize what really matters does not exist, our technologies can cause more externalities than ever before and can introduce new unnatural entities to the natural heritage of humankind, the commons.

Ex-religious (strong focus on Mormonism/the-church-of-jesus-christ-of-latter-day-saints since that's the one I grew up believing) memes and stories from people who've had negative experiences with this and other fundamentalist religions. If you're particularly fond of religion this may offend you, don't read it as this is meant to be a safe place for people who've been traumatized by religion. Please send me your stories and I'll put them here. Please specify if you want to remain anonymous or to be credited, I'll leave it as an anonymous contribution otherwise. And no, I did not make any of the memes, I'm not that cool.
