My first ever acquaintance with Candy was at the age of twelve through the anime. Three years later I read the manga which was quite different from the anime, and it took me some time to understand that the manga was the original story and the anime was just a TV adaptation for children. The Greek manga which I read was based on the Italian one, and went beyond the original ending. At the time I couldn't know that the Italian continuation was not written by Mizuki. However, the ridiculous plot and the ugly drawings which had nothing to do with Igarashi's work gradually lessened my interest in the story, and so I dropped the manga without getting to the (supposed) end. For many years I forgot about Candy, and it was not before 2017 that she came into my life again. I accidentally came across a Greek forum containing information about the anime and the manga. I was enlightened about the manga and about what its original ending was. I understood how the Italians deceived so many fans with their silly continuation. I learned that besides the manga there was a novel written in the 1970s and never published outside of Japan, and there was also a new novel written in 2010 which was not a continuation of the manga but a revised version of the old novel. All that fueled my interest again and led me to look for as much information as possible about Candy Candy. I entered a well-known blog related to that story and became a fan again after so many years. As a result, my perspective on the story changed as I learned to see it as a mature reader and not an adolescent one. I became friends with several other fans and shared my love for Candy Candy. The plethora of information I gathered, as well as a whole beautiful world of fanfictions, opened a door for me which I thought was closed forever, and now I'm grateful to have met again the beloved heroine of my childhood and know her much better than I did as a child.
