I write literary novels, and I mentor other writers. 

I'm the author of The Cure for Death by Lightning, A Recipe for Bees, Turtle Valley, The Spawning Grounds and the upcoming novel, The Almost Wife.

I also write literacy learner novels for teens and adults working to improve literacy skills.

My literary novels have been published in several languages worldwide. My first novel, The Cure For Death By Lightning, was an international bestseller and won the UK's Betty Trask Award and a nomination for Canada's Giller Prize. A Recipe for Bees soon followed with nominations for the Giller and the IMPAC Dublin Award. A Rhinestone Button was a national bestseller in Canada and my first book, The Miss Hereford Stories, was shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour. 

After nearly a decade of teaching within the optional-residency creative writing MFA program at the University of British Columbia, I now mentor writers around the world through my own on-line forums. I also host the Providence Bay Writers' Camp for adults on Manitoulin Island, Lake Huron, Ontario.
