I remember being a tween (a long, long time ago -- in a galaxy far far away) and just learning what websites I liked when I found the ancient web url: Quizzilla. Even back then I struggled remembering if it was spelled with one z or two. Young writers had so much agency back then. The quizzes format was cleverly used to write one shots and I ate up fanfiction of the Naruto genre cus that obviously was my thing back then.
Even with all the original fiction I devoured growing up as a lil book thief, fanfictions came with the heaviest emotional punch even if the character personalities weren't canon. It would be devastating to come online and find one's favorite author had deleted their works and all but disappeared. The certainty of connection online wasn't like it is now.
A lot of my youth was shaped by the early internet/forum culture. For good and for bad, I've taken a lot of influence that can be seen in my writing -- if only I shared it more right? This year I embrace it. My memory might be trash, but you can't erase nostalgia.
I'm in my late twenties now, and far from my tweens. Still, there's a lot of unlearning that has to be done, of my shame towards my niches. I hope the vulnerability I share in my stories make you feel apart of this grand design for the better, and not just the worst.
