          Pope steps forward to hoist himself over the wall with ease and John B follows. Kie disappears over the structure next with a little more effort than the boys had, but I just stand there, blinking at the wall that's at least a good few inches taller than me.
          
          "Need help?" JJ's careful voice comes from beside me.
          
          "I got it," I say stubbornly without so much as a glance his way. Reaching up, I place my hands atop the wall and attempt to push myself up with a grunt. But too short to get my legs over the top, it's a brief effort before my arms give out on me, my feet crashing to the dirt again. 
          
          I definitely don't got it.
          
          "Here, let me just—" The blond boy reaches for my waist, but I'm quick to pin him with yet another glare, daring him to touch me.
          
          "I said I got it," I snap.
          
          We end up in a staring match of sorts, my eyes sharp and his soft – like gentle waves lapping at the side of a jagged cliff – until he finally cracks a hint of a smile. "I know," he almost whispers, placing his rugged hands on my skin anyway.

          Enjoying how the focus on JB distracts anyone from noticing the tense vibe between JJ and I, I join in, "Is Ward gonna pay for you to go to college?" But just as quickly as I thought up the idea, I'm throwing it away. Because let's be real... "Never mind. You're not going to college." 
          
          John B gives me a deadpan stare, but Pope was genuinely impressed by my jab. He reaches a hand out with an amused grin and we wiggle our fingertips together – a silent Woogity-Woogity. 
          
          "Ooh, wait!" I gasp, feigning excitement as another one comes to me. "Your birthday's coming up. Think they'll throw you one of those wild Kook ragers?"
          
          "Yeah," John B scoffs sarcastically. "Your ex can bring the coke."
          
          "Ooh, low blow, dude," Pope tsks.
          
          "Ha-ha," I drone out, narrowing my eyes as I flash my brother the finger. Though I can't help but notice that the mention of Rafe finally made JJ's pitiful gaze break away from me. He turns his head off to the side, his jaw tight as he not-so-subtly clears his throat.
