I love stories of all different kinds. My mind is constantly swarming with ideas for new stories. Sometimes I'll come up with something bright and full of optimism, and then there are moments of darkness that produce stories that aren't so friendly. We all have our dark side.
I've made many attempts at writing fantasy or historical drama, but I always seem to get hung up on the fine details and question my accuracy when it comes to the time period. Aren't we all our worst critics? I have seen so many movies, and read such a wide variety of books that I worry about ripping off someone else's idea by accident.
I've heard it said that if you're stuck without a fresh story idea, that you should just write about what you know.
I like poetry for that reason, since it's composed of personal thoughts inspired by brief moments in time. Poems can be as abstract, literal, or metaphorical as you want them to be. Plus they don't require complex character development, or tightly woven and cohesive plot scenarios.
