id: @dealtdeath lottie’s elbow buckled sharply against the rough bark of the towering tree she was leaning on, her adrenaline starting to ebb while her hands throbbed painfully from clawing at the dirt and roots beneath her in desperation. she was almost embarrassed to meet his gaze amid the tense silence; she felt her lip begin to tremble as if a wave of failure was imminent, yet she forcibly kept herself optimistic, clinging to a fragile sense of hope. a faint nod responded to his remark, with a ghost of a smile flickering at her lips. it didn’t quite reach her eyes, but it was unfortunately, all she could muster in that moment. “ thank you. ” honestly, she should’ve been more worried about what his presence signified for her safety— but her mind was preoccupied with thoughts of the girls and the urgent need to destroy the demons responsible. consequences be damned. “ i (... )” she pushed herself upright, trying to locate where the last girl might be hiding or lying injured. “ we need to find the last girl. c’mon. ”

death’s scrutinizing gaze lands on the huntress first, as if he were annoyed by this disturbance. but then, as he looks at the three terrified girls by charlotte’s side, the annoyance turns into something rare for the deity. it is almost tender, apologetic. not for his introduction, but for the situation they were placed in. his heart beats only once per minute, and it is for humanity—- his biggest annoyance, his greatest weakness. the intake of breath is sharp as he takes a small step forward, his eyes landing on charlotte once more. she was not in the best shape for what she had done, but she did it anyway—- determination and empathy had been the best human qualities about charlotte, that he could not deny.
“do not apologize for showing human emotion, nor for calling my name in a time of need. my creators be damned,” he looks away from her then, towards the girls once more. he knows their names, he knows they’re in the middle of rehearsing for some play, he knows they were in the same friend group. they do not deserve this and yet here they are, suffering at the hands of demons that did not belong on this earth. he takes a few steps towards them, a warm smile on his lips as he pulls something out from his pockets. he whispers to them, in hopes of making them less afraid for what is to come. he will deal with everything later, as soon as the girls are safe.
