Basem Hamid embarked on his distinguished medical journey after earning his M.D. from Damascus University, specializing in the challenging fields of neurology and pain medicine. His academic prowess was evident early on, as he graduated as valedictorian from his high school in Damascus, Syria, in 1989, setting the stage for his medical studies at one of the country's top medical schools.
After graduating with his MD in 1995, he moved to the United States to continue his education. His postgraduate path began in 1996 at Mount Sinai University Services in New York City, where he undertook an internship that introduced him to the complexities of internal medicine and neurology. He pursued residency training at West Virginia University from 1997 to 2001, where his outstanding performance led to his appointment as Chief Resident in the Department of Neurology.
With a growing interest in pain management, he completed a fellowship in pain medicine in 2003 at the University of Iowa's Department of Anesthesia. This training equipped him with the skills to address a range of pain conditions, from chronic ailments to cancer-related pain. His expertise grew as he transitioned into an academic role, serving as an Assistant Professor at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 2003 to 2006, where he played a crucial role in enhancing the university's pain management program.
In 2006, Basem Hamid, MD, relocated to Houston, Texas. He joined The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pain Medicine. There, he improved treatment methodologies and held significant administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of Pain Medicine's Committee and Director of the Pain Medicine Fellowship Program.
