He hesitated.
She stopped. "Elliot?"
He looked at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "There’s a lot I haven’t told you."
Elena’s heart skipped.
"What do you mean?"
She remembered the novel. Elliot’s character had been almost nonexistent. A ghost on the edge of every scene. But this Elliot... he was very real.
"What aren’t you telling me?"

Then she turned and walked away, finding Elliot again near the staircase.
“Was I too harsh?” she asked.
“No,” he said, handing her a drink. “You were honest. That’s rare here.”
She looked at him, really looked. “Why do you always show up exactly when I need you?”
He smiled. “Maybe I like being the one person you don’t have to fight.”
She laughed—genuinely, for the first time in a long time.

Elliot studied her for a moment. “You’ve changed.”
She tilted her head. “What do you mean?”
“You’re still quiet, but... not afraid. It’s like you’re fighting without raising your fists.”
Laura smiled. “It’s all I have left.”
Elliot reached into his satchel and pulled out a chocolate bar. “Peace offering?”
She took it. “You know me too well.”
“I try.”
