@Chris_the_potato also, writing a little bit off of some random prompt every day helps you to develop your skills, much like with drawing. 

@Chris_the_potato realistically, I don't really have very good advice besides giving yourself a basic outline of what you want to happen in your story. I sometimes do that, but I never really stick to the plan, I just end up zoning out and have a final product after 8 or so hours that I edit the next day. I do definitely recommend getting a beta reader/editor if you can though, mine helps me figure out how to make a more cohesive story.
