            cove noticed the small action with the keys  ,  opting to silently file it away instead of commenting on it.  it wasn't like being questioned by the police was all fun and games  ,  he could understand some nerves around it.
            
            he gave a nod  ,  starting to walk down the hall while slipping his hands into his pockets.  "so  ..  you said you have a kid?  you seem so young."

            ` ` heh .. ` ` she let out a small noise of amusement before she stepped out , grabbing her bag and keys from a nearby locker where she had stored them . her hands trembled as she gripped into the keys to feel the sting . she slowly walked back to the other , a sideway smile that didn ' t quite meet her eyes on her face . ` ` lead the way , sir . ` ` 

     `` i . . . I don't know what you're talking about . `` he denied , shaking his head . `` i was at work . ``

            "you talked about the last scene.  you were sighted at this one as well."  he crossed his arms against his chest.  "a bit odd to see you there multiple times  ,  isn't it?"

    `` i already talked to someone about what I saw . how much more do y'all need from me ? `` 

     `` just needed to take a walk . it's not any of your business , though . `` he huffs out , stuffing his hands into his jacket pockets . `` why are YOU out here so late ? ``

            "that's what happens when you grow up  ,  kid.  the world's a stressful place."  he dug in his pocket to fish out a pack of cigarettes.  "what're you doing out here anyways?  it's late."

     `` you look more disheveled than the last time we saw each other . more tired to . `` 

      `` i don't know anything about it . `` he said , continuing to fidget with his sleeves . `` can I go now ? my sister will be worried if she comes home and I'm not there . ``

            cove raised a brow.  "no  ,  that's not it.   /  should  /   I be thinking that?"  he closed the file and pushed it to the side.  he already knew it from the inside out.
            
            "we saw you live near the crime scene.  we were hoping you'd be able to provide some insight."

   `` no . `` he said simply , eyes on the table as he fidgets with his sleeves under it . cassian finally glances over to the man and the file . `` im assuming you think I have something to do with whatever case you got there . `` 

¹  he's a heavy smoker.  he's moved primarily to cigarettes  ,  and will only dabble in weed on particularly stressful days.
            
            ²  he has skills in tracking  ,  something he learned through hunting.
            
            ³  he's stern but soft.  he hates slacking off during a job  ,  but he also knows when comfort is needed  —  towards both victims and his coworkers.
            
            ⁴  he was a police officer for a decade before a detective picked up on his skill set.  he was given the detectives exam based on their recommendation.
            
            ⁵  he's a genuinely serious person.  he's the type of person to stare at you blankly after you've told a joke.  it's really hard to get him to relax.  serious is just his default.
            
            ⁶  he has a pet dog named truffle.  she's a pug.
            
            ⁷  he doesn't care about someone's background and reasonings.  if someone needs help  ,  then he's going to give it.

   '  cove  '   was a name destined to never be taken seriously.  born to two parents most akin to hippies  ,  he grew up with two of the most loving yet neglectful people.  they loved the world so much  ,  to the point that they often forgot about their son.
            
            a child wasn't in their plans  ,  but they had seen it as a gift to begin with.  another person to share their mindset with.  when their son didn't take to their lifestyle as they had hoped  ,  they grew to disregard his existence.  not out of hate  ,  but out of a lack of attachment.
            
            they provided for him  ,  but not in the ways that truly matters.  he was clothed  ,  educated  ,  and fed  —  he was ignored and encouraged to partake in illegal substances at far too young of an age.
            
            he left the moment he was of age.  they didn't stop him and he didn't look back.  the moment he walked away  ,  he never saw them again.
            
            the one thing he thanks his parents for is what they taught him.  in both academics and the world  ,  they made sure he was knowledgeable.  
            
            it was with these skills that he took a shine on detective work.  where most people would be out of their element in the wilderness  ,  cove found it to be natural.  it was easy to pick out details when he knew what was abnormal.
            
            the cases he solve primarily revolve around the wilderness.  most of his assignments have dealt with bodies dug up in forests or missing person's cases.  it's these situations that he can solve much easier than your average person.
