I’m tired of seeing every romantic book adaptation look exactly the same. I’m watching Off Campus on Amazon Prime and realizing that by 2027 we’re going to get flooded with romance adaptations from BookTok and romance novels… but it’s always white, white, white, white. Only white love stories getting the big productions.
And I keep thinking: how is it possible that Black girls — not mixed, not light skin, not “racially ambiguous” — but dark skin Black girls, still don’t get to be the main romantic lead in these stories? We deserve soft love stories too. We deserve to be desired, chosen, obsessed over, written beautifully and filmed beautifully.
I’ve read so many incredible romance books here in Wattpad , including stories I’ve written myself, and there are SO many amazing Black female characters that could carry entire romantic series. So why are we still invisible when it comes to mainstream adaptations?
I want a dark skin Black girl as the protagonist. Fully Black. Dark skin. Romantic lead. That’s it.

@italiancoco Hello, I am a fellow dark skin black woman. As someone who is clearly not mixed or ambiguous I agree with you 100%. Many time I've watched movies where the black woman is always portrayed as a single mother, not married, constantly being traumatized by men. It's like the people who create these movies believe that love was only meant for white women while black women are meant to constantly be traumatized.
