Sammy, I actually left a comment explaining what happened.  Seems I need to rewrite the chapter for clarity.
          
          Dan's adopted mother killed his biological mother and stole him.  Her name was Amelia Malone, Caleb's mother. he and Caleb are full brothers. Eli and Ben are his half brothers only sharing a father.
          
          Dan's adopted mom was also Claire Hathaway's sister, the woman mattie grew up thinking was her own mother.  She helped her sister steal Mattie and then run.  
          
          That is what Dan found out.
