vi. SPECIAL K CEREAL

AWSTEN KNIGHT'S CHEST ROSE AND FELL AS HE SLEPT PEACEFULLY. Rosie Soap, on the other hand, was wide awake.
She felt a little creepy watching him sleep like this, but he was just so mesmerizing.
Maybe that's why she let him sleep in her room with her. Maybe that's why she didn't find another obvious place for him to sleep.
She had wanted to stay far away from him while he was visiting. But now, here she was. Dummy, she thought. I'm such a dummy.
"Are you gonna watch me sleep all night?" Awsten asked out nowhere, startling Rosie. His eyes were still closed, and his voice was sleepy.
Rosie hadn't heard him like this in years.
"I can't sleep," she whispered.
"Do you want a kiss or something?" he chuckled, opening one eye to look at her. But when he saw her worried expression, he took it back. "I'm sorry, that was dumb. It was a joke. Sorry. That was stupid."
He paused. "Do you wanna talk or something? Would that help you sleep?"
He used to call her when she couldn't sleep. Usually during finals. It always worked.
So she nodded.
"Okay...about what?"
She thought about it.
"I don't know." It was a lie. She did know what she wanted to talk about: She wanted to talk about them. Wanted to talk about what they were.
It was the first time since 2011 that they were both 100% single with no complications, and they were sharing a bed.
"I don't know either." It was a lie on his end as well. He wanted to talk about the same thing. He also wanted to talk about that party. The one in 2014.
But they didn't talk about it. They both just stared up at Rosie's ceiling, at the glow-in-the-dark stickers. And eventually, they both fell asleep.

"Oh, come on, are you serious?" West Howard exclaimed the next morning. He was standing in the kitchen, the cupboard doors open. "Who ate the last of the Special K?"
"That's old lady cereal," Herc told him, pulling a mug off the shelf below West's missing cereal. "Also, I ate it last night."
"Oh, fuck you."
"Rosie and I can go get some more," Herc told him, rolling his eyes.
"Who said I wanted to go?" Rosie yawned. Herc went quiet. "No, of course I'll go."
They got dressed and headed out to Rosie's car. Before they even pulled out of the driveway, she turned the music off.
"Too early for ABBA," she grumbled. "Remind me to bring this CD in when we get back."
The two of them drove quietly for a few minutes before they stopped at a light and Herc asked, "So how was it? Last night, I mean."
Rosie glanced over at him and he wiggled his eyebrows. "Shut up," she smiled, shoving his arm. "Nothing happened."
"What position is 'nothing happened'?"
"Shut up!" she laughed, shoving him again. "I'm serious! We just laid there looking up at the ceiling."
"Sounds boring." He pulled the visor down and fixed his hair, using the little mirror. "You guys should try—"
They bought West's Special K cereal, and drove back home where everyone was gathered in the kitchen, still rather sleepy.
Rosie gave Aurora her "ABBA Gold" CD, and grabbed a mug for some coffee.
"So what are we doing today?" Awsten asks, taking the cereal box from Herc and handing it to West.
"Chillin," West answered, taking the box.
"Maybe you're 'chillin'," Rosie said with air quotes, "But I am not 'chillin.' I've got shit to do."
West raised his eyebrows. "Like what?"
"I have to go find another air mattress since ours popped," she told him, sticking her tongue out at the end.
Venus mumbled something about how they were "literal children."
"We're busy too," Aurora piped up, gesturing to Venus and Cassidy. "We have to go look for apartments."
"I want no part in that." Herc threw his hands up.
"Then don't come," Venus told her brother. "We don't want you there anyways."
Herc flipped her off. She flipped him off back.
"Oh," Rosie remembered. "I need to go to Quinn's later too."
Quinn's was a music store. They sold CDs, Vinyls, guitar straps, drumsticks, you name it.
"I need some more CDs," she explained. "Especially for my car."
"I'll go with you," Awsten smiled.
Rosie almost let an, "Oh," slip, but she just smiled back at him.
"I'll come too," Herc volunteered. "My mom took my — I mean the house's 'Up All Night' CD. Need to replace it."
"Perfect," Rosie grinned.
And it was a genuine smile too. Partly because Herc Kline's so-called "secret" obsession with a handful of boy bands was the funniest thing ever to her; And partly because after night, she's not sure if she could spend any more time alone with Awsten Knight without making another big mistake.
