v. GALAXY LEGGINGS, SCENE HAIRCUTS, AND ORANGE JUICE

saturday, december 12th

HERC KLINE HAD THE SMALLEST ROOM IN THE HOUSE. He slept on a twin size bed. Not that he needed anything bigger.

Aurora had a full, but she had a "boyfriend" who wouldn't be too happy about her sharing a bed with another man.

West had a full as well, but he tossed and turned in his sleep so much it was almost impossible to sleep with him.

There wasn't another couch in the hosue. There wasn't another air mattress.

Meaning the only other place Awsten Knight could sleep was in Rosie's room. In her bed. With her.

She could say no. She could say she'd rather sleep in a bed with both Venus and Cassidy — she had a queen after all.

But something kept Rosie from saying no. Something deep down inside of her made her say, "Awsten, you could sleep in my room if you want.

"Are you sure, June?" he asked. There was that nickname again.

"Yeah, it's fine, I'm sure," she fake smiled. Where was this coming from?

"Where are you gonna sleep though?" He furrowed his brow, he hadn't connected the dots yet.

"My bed's big enough...we could both sleep there without bothering each other."

It took her finally saying that for Awsten Knight to realize what was happening. So, "Okay," was all he said.

"Do you remember when we first met?" Awsten asked. He and Rosie were laying in her bed, both with their arms at their sides, legs straight. Not daring to move in fear they'd accidentally brush against the other.

Of course, Rosie remembered when they first met. How could she forget? "Yeah," she answered.

It was August, 2011. The 31st if she remembers correctly. Or maybe it was the 30th.

Either way, school was about to start, and it was Rosie's first day in Texas. Ever. And she was all alone.

She had called Luke that day. He had wanted to come with her, wanted to help her move in. But Claire and Oliver Soap said no way.

Her parents couldn't be there due to an issue regarding their basement flooding, and Luke was about to start his senior year of high school.

"Well," Luke had said over the phone, "I'm on Google right now. And it says there's a pretty good grocery store in your area. H-E-B. Go get an Arizona or something to calm your nerves. Then you can go meet your roommate."

Rosie listened to him, and she drove to this grocery store after he sent her the directions.

When she turned down the aisle to get her tea, someone else was there. It was a public grocery store, it's not like he wasn't allowed to be there, but something about him made Rosie nervous.

He had the ugliest haircut she'd ever seen in her entire life. That was a bit of an exaggeration, but that's how she always told the story.

He was standing in front of the orange juice, trying to decide which one to take. And to be honest, he was taking a really long time.

"They're all the same!" Rosie wanted to yell, but she wouldn't dare speak to a stranger that way.

Finally, he noticed her standing there and said, "Oh shit, sorry, here," and moved out of the way.

Rosie had grabbed an Arizona tea and went to find some tortilla chips before checking out. And what do you know, the guy from the juice aisle was in line behind her.

"Well, well, well, look who it is: Orange Juice Girl," he had said even though Rosie didn't even buy any orange juice. If anything, she should've been calling him Orange Juice Boy.

He kept trying to talk to her, and the line was long, so Rosie eventually gave in and took his offer up on a conversation.

He told her his name was Awsten. "Spelled A-W-S-T-E-N," he explained.

She told him her name was Rosie. "Pretty name," he smiled. "Rose...Nature names are cute."

She had checked out, he said goodbye, and she went to her car.

She was having trouble getting her car unlocked, and Awsten came out of the store. Turns out they were parked right next to each other.

"Hey, would you look at that," he had said. He had pulled out his phone and said, "Here, can I give you my number?"

And when Rosie gave him an odd look, "I'm not a creep or anything, I promise — wait that's exactly what a creep would say. — I'm not though, really. It just really looks like the Universe wants us to be friends."

Something about 2011 Scene Awsten made Rosie trust him. So she gave him her number too.

"Can you believe that was nine years ago?" Current Non-Scene Awsten asked, pulling Rosie from her daydream.

"It's crazy," was all she said.

The day was so clear in her head. Nearly every detail was there, playing over and over again like a movie.

Which really sucked because all she wanted to do was forget about it.

"I can't believe you guys let me have that haircut for that long," he laughed, and she did too.

"Yeah, well at least Aurora didn't convince you that the galaxy legging trend was going to live forever."
