it's called mirroring the endless night :)

...

The knocking easily shakes you awake. In a panic, you fumble around for your phone to check the time- it's only 5:48 in the morning, the sun is just barely beginning to peek over the horizon. Tossing the covers off, your still half-asleep brain manages to remember to put pants on before you go running out of the bedroom.

"Alright, I hear you! Gimme a sec," you yell out, confused as to who would even show up to the cabin, let alone at a time like this.

Your fingers twist at the lock before turning the knob, yanking open the door to be met by two tall men dressed in uniform- police uniforms.

"Hell, miss uhhh..." one of them drawls on.

"_____," you reply, offering your name as you rub the sleep from your eyes with your right hand.

"Right, miss _____. We're here to ask a few questions, nothing dramatic, you're not in trouble. We're here due to a concern from one mister George in town."

'The old man from the shop' you think to yourself, nodding as the officer continues to speak.

"He gave us a call the other day after you visited the shop, said he and his wife gave you the rundown on Big Red after you came into their store asking some questions."

"Ah, yeah I recall that. I dunno, guess just got paranoid after my first couple nights here in the cabin. I'd been hearing some weird noises at night, and I've heard about your guys' local urban legend, so I decided to go ask the locals about it. I'm fine though, and I'm sure what I've been hearing is just the standard animal. Y'know, fish and woodland creatures and the like," you reply, feeling guilt over how you're definitely going to be lying for the majority of this conversation.

"I see," the officer nods, "well, the reason we've come to check on you now is because just a few hours ago there was a sighting."

"Sighting?" you repeat, your brow furrowing.

"Yes, a few teenagers from town had been camping near one of the rivers upstream, the ones that stem from this lake. They called in around two o'clock, said they heard a splashing and claimed to have seen Big Red."

You purse your lips, "sure it wasn't just some teens yanking your chain? Y'know, prank calling? That's pretty common where I'm from."

The cop that'd been doing the talking narrows his eyes and frowns at you, "miss, I know you're an outsider, but the people of this town take this 'urban legend', as you put it, very seriously. Red is a danger. If you've seen anything or feel unsafe, let us know."

Nervously swallowing, you quickly nod, "of course, of course. I haven't seen anything though, but I do appreciate the concern, officers."

The second policemen who'd been silent up until now eyes you warily before finally speaking up, "how'd you injure your hand, if you don't mind me asking."

Instinctively, you bring your left hand to your chest and cradle it with the other, thinking up a quick lie, "oh, yesterday I was trying to do some fishing on the dock over there. Got a nasty splinter in my palm, old wood really scratched me up. Probably won't be going near there again."

He hums, nodding his head. You're not sure if he fully buys the story.

The first cop who'd spoken pipes up once more, "well, thanks for your cooperation miss _____. We'll leave you be to enjoy the rest of your morning." He paused to reach into a pocket on his vest, pulling out a small piece of paper and handing it over to you, "here's the number for our precinct's office. Small town, small office, but there's normally someone there to pick up the phone."
