The arms around you don't help your panic- in fact, it makes you freak out even more. You sputter and choke as water goes up your nose, and when your arm finally finds the wood of the dock you struggle to pull yourself up while also trying to kick away whoever was holding onto you.
You almost scream as you're lifted up out of the water- but quickly quiet down once you realize that you're being placed on the dock. Your coughing doesn't stop, and you found yourself hunched over and shaking, cold and soaked to the bone.
In the corner of your eye you finally see him. Not all of him, but he's most certainly there. The top of his head is just barely above the water, dim golden eyes watching you with curiosity. With the lack of light you can just barely see the red scales that make up his skin and you finally see why the townspeople refer to him as big red.
You don't move. You don't even look at him directly. And he doesn't move either.
But you're terrified.
You cough up some more water while you struggle to breathe, but you try your best to back up from whatever this creature is and get back to where the dock meets land.
In the darkness you spy a hand come up out of the water and reach out towards you, and your fight or flight instincts kick in. With a sudden rush of adrenaline you're back on your feet and sprinting towards the cabin, not caring if you can still barely take in air, you just wanted to get away from whatever was in the water.
As soon as your hand grabs the handle to the front door you swing it open and bound inside, immediately locking it behind you. Your chest heaves as you try to calm down, and after coughing up the last bits of water you're able to breathe normally once more.
You creep over into the kitchen and slowly peer out the window, narrowing your eyes as you try and look out to the dock. You can vaguely make out a figure at the end of the dock- the creature that had pulled you out of the water. Just sitting there. Waiting.
You sigh and step away from the window, leaning against the wall as you try and get a hold of your bearings. You pat your soaked clothes, cringing when you feel the fabric sticking to your body. Your hands go to your pockets and you gasp quietly when you realize the bracelet isn't there.
'I must've dropped it when I fell in the lake... shit,' you think to yourself, leaning over to look out the window once more.
The creature is still there.
You reason it over in your mind, deciding whether or not you should stay cooped up in the cabin for the rest of the night. Hide, or go outside and confront whatever being this is.
You decide to stay inside.
With a shaky sigh you push yourself away from the window and walk into the hallway. You start to peel off your soaking wet clothing as you walk into the bathroom, tossing the pile of wet fabric into the sink; you'd sort it out later.
After fiddling with the shower tap for a minute, you managed to get a stream of water pouring down over you. The water was by no means hot, but compared to the cold water of the lake you happily welcomed the warmth it gave you.
You stood there for a few minutes, allowing the water to wash over you and help you calm down after that moment of panic beside the lake. After letting your nerves relax you started to move around, grabbing some soap and scrubbing your body clean, getting off all the grime and sweat that'd built up after a hot summer day.
As you get washed up your mind wanders off, thinking back to that creature from the lake. You thought about what it might've been, it certainly wasn't human. Was it some kind of mutated fish? A man-made creation? Or was it an animal yet to be discovered. Thoughts like these bounce back and forth in your head, you simply can't stop thinking about it.
