I gasped as I slammed the door shut. Clay ran down the stairs and stood behind me.
"Who is it?" He asked, putting his arm around me. I tried to answer, but I couldn't form a sentence. I gripped the side of Clay's shirt as his facial expression slowly turned into a look of worry.
He reached for the handle and opened the door, revealing my dad.
"Why the fuck are you here?" Clay said to him, pulling me close to him.
"I'm here for my kids, why else would I be here?" His eyes met mine, and I could feel the anger behind his facial expression.
"Yea real funny of you acting like you can just show up and take them. Now get off my property before I call the cops."
Matt and Henry ran down the stairs. They both seemed to notice who was at the door, Matt pulling Henry into his arms and walking into the living room, away from the doorway.
"Matt call Mom and Dad." Clay said before slamming the door shut on my father. Matt grabbed his phone out of his pocket and held it up to his ear.
"Yea hi Mom. When will you be home?" He paused, listening to her answer, "Ok well George and Henry's dad is at our front door right now."
Matt looked up at Clay, who had been holding me tight. My hand was still gripped to his shirt, my knuckles starting to turn white. Henry had been sitting on the couch, hugging his knees.
"Mom will be home in 5 minutes." Matt said, standing up and moving a curtain to look outside. "He's still standing there."
Clay walked towards the window and looked out, moving the curtain aside. Matt sat next to Henry on the couch, rubbing circles on his back.
"Why is he still standing there?" Clay asked before sitting down. I sat next to him and let myself lean on his shoulder. His arm rested on my shoulder.
We sat in silence while we waited for Clay's mom to arrive home. Henry hugged his knees and rocked back and forth, breathing heavily. Matt brought him close and whispered calmly to him, helping control his breathing. Clay stood up as he heard a car pull into the driveway.
"Mom's home," He said, making his way towards the garage door, "wait here." He opened the door and headed into the garage to greet his mom. They walked in together, Clay's mom making her way towards Henry and I.
"We'll figure this out I promise." She took us into her arms before pulling out her phone. "Dad should be home soon, for now we don't do anything. Is he still there?"
Clay moved towards the window and moved the curtain, nodding to confirm my father's presence on the front porch.
Clay's mom sat next to Henry and rubbed his back, while Clay took me into his arms and held me tight. I could feel his heartbeat against my head as I tried to keep tears from falling. My throat burned and my head throbbed. The last thing Henry and I needed was the abuse from our father back.
A door slammed shut in the driveway, so Clay stood up and looked out the window yet again.
"Dad's home."
"Get off of my property before I have you arrested again!" A faint yell could be heard from outside. Clay opened the front door to see his dad making his way towards the front porch.
"My kids aren't 18 so they have no choice but to come with me."
Clay's mom stood up and walked up to the front door. She stood in front of Clay and crossed her arms.
"You're an unfit father. There is no way we are sending them home with you just so you can neglect them again." Clay's dad yelled.
Henry started to shake, so Matt took his hand and led him up the stairs, slamming their bedroom door behind them.
