"C'MON, WE'RE GOING SOMEWHERE."

steve and sodapop stood in front of
finley's bed where she was curled up
in her blankets.

"where?"finley asked as soda sat
on her bed in hopes to get her out
of the house.

it was mid january and things had
gotten better for finley, but there
were also days like today where she
just wanted to stay in and sulk.

"race tracks. there's a drag race
going on tonight and we know you'd
be mad at us if we didn't take you."
steve explained, with a little smile on
his lips thinking back to the one time the
two had snuck away for a weekend trip
to talladega.

"can we stop by the dingo after
for shakes?"she asked and soda nodded.

"get out and we'll go."she told them and
they bolted out.

she took her time getting dressed,
and once she was done, she looked
at herself in the mirror as she slipped
on dallas's jacket.

her hair was flowing over her shoulders,
and she wore a old beat up pair of sneakers
that she had from the past two years.

a knock on the door came and she saw
her older brother standing there in the
doorway.

"you about ready?"soda asked, and
she nodded with a small smile.

"can we still go to the dingo?"she asked
him and he laughed, "i told you we could."

the two walked downstairs seeing darry sitting
in his chair reading his newpaper per usual, and
ponyboy watching mickey with two-bit.

"we're leaving!" soda yelled, and darry gave them
a wave before the three left.

walking down the streets of  tusla towards the drag race,
finley smiled as she thought back to one of her favorite
race memories.

"do you guys remeber talladega?"finley asked, looking up
and steve grinned.

"you screaming and smiling when we finally
made it and blowing out my ear drum?"steve
questioned, glancing at her,  "of course. thats the
day that i lost my hearing."

finley chuckled, slapping his arm playfully before
looking at soda who was shaking his head at the two.

"dad even let you try whiskey."soda brought up
and she smiled, "and i still drink it."

they soon reached the drag race, and soda
had glanced over at wren just in time to see
a real, genuine smile for the first time in months

as they reached a few of the greasers, wren had
a small smile on her face.

tim and curley shepard approaced the three,
and tim immediately wrapped wren into a hug,
shocking both steve and sodapop.

"how you doing fin?"tim asked, pulling back as
she hugged curley, and she flashed him a smile.

"i'm doing a lot better. it's hard most days but its
getting bearable."she told him, and soda gave her
a questioning look.

"when dally and tim would fight, i'd
be the one to break up the fights most
of the time between them."she explained,
and heard tim laugh next to her.

"saved both dal and i a few broken jaws."
he remarked making finley laugh.

"you betting any money tonight?"curley asked,
and finley shook her head.

"i havent been working since october and
even if i had, i have no clue whos in tonight
and the only person i'd bet on is my brother."
finley explained and they nodded.

"nice ring,"curley pointed it out, making finley
glance at the ring on her ring finger, "who got
that for you?"

"uh, dal did."she mumbled, playing with the ring
on her left hand, "no clue how he got it or even could
afford it but darry handed it to me on christmas eve
telling me it was from dally."

tim gave her what she liked to call 'a pity smile,'
something she had gotten so used to over the past
two, almost three year since the day her parents had
died.

her thoughts were broken from the engines
of the cars getting ready to speed down the track

she watched as the checkered flag was waved, and
the cars took off within the moments.

cheers and the sound of cars rushing by
filled her ears, and it felt like home

her father always took her, her brothers and
steve to as many drag races as he could, and
it was the one thing from her childhood that
was always prominent within her memories.

she cheered as she saw the cars having one final
lap left, and the car she had picked in a bet with
steve was winning.

she laughed as her car crossed the finish line,
and she turned towards steve who's shoulders
were slumped.

"i expect that extra shake tonight randle!"
