Chapter ten

I try once again to raise my arms or move my legs, but fail miserably. They don't budge and it only hurts more everytime I try. I turn my head to my left, though it was achingly slow, and saw Zayn who looks like he's given up his will to fight his way out of this. I'm not even sure if he's breathing.

I look around in panic, trying to make sense of everything. I can't talk, I can't scream. Everytime I try, it feels like someone is scraping pointy knives in my throat. It's dark. Very dark. We are still in the laboratory, but... honestly, everything that happened has been a blur to me.

I don't know where the rest are. Or if they're here. Or if they're still alive. All I know is that I'm immobilized. And Zayn is here too, but he stopped showing signs of life. Half an hour ago, he was moaning, but he suddenly stopped.

All I remember is after I just finished putting on my shirt, I heard Luke scream something. Alarmed, I went out to see what's happened and then... I don't know. I can't remember, it's all black in my memory. What happened?

But I just want to know he's alive. That I'm not alone. And I want him to know the same thing.

"Maeve, wake up. Please."

I open my eyes too quickly and regretted it immediately because the bright light stung so bad. I squinted and groaned.

"Where am I?" I managed to croak.

"Great, you can talk. We're still in the lab," he said. My brain is still fuzzy, but I'm trying to recognize the owner of the voice speaking to me.

Still squinting, I said, "Can you help me up?"

I felt strong, warm hands support my back, helping me up in a sitting position. Finally, my eyes adjusted and I realized that I was staring right into another pair of eyes. Bright hazel ones. Zayn.

"I have a lot of questions and I hope you have answers."

"Sorry to disappoint, but I'm just as confused as you," he said, handing me a glass of water. I take it and drank the contents in two gulps.

"What about Luke? He might know," I said hopefully, trying not to let the negative feeling I have consume me.

"Luke... he's gone. I don't know. So are the rest."

"But he's not dead right? And the others?" I press on, still clinging to my hope.

He didn't respond. Instead, he held his hand out to me, offering to help me stand. "Come on, let's try looking for them. I would've gone alone, but I was worried you'd flip out when you wake up and realize you're alone."

"Yeah. Thanks for waking me up. Honestly, I thought you were dead," I said, trying to sound normal.

"No. I couldn't move and speak, and I thought you were dead, so I forced myself to sleep hoping I wouldn't wake up."

"But then you woke up."

"So did you." He said, winking at me.

I know I shouldn't be feeling other kinds of emotions other than worry and fear, but that moment when he winked, it was... heart-stopping. Tiny butterflies flew in my stomach. But I tried to ignore it. I know he was just trying to make me feel better. Ignore, ignore, ignore.
