The days sort of flew by. I forgot about Frank and The Legion and everything, my life mattered more."God Joey", Susie laughed, "You suck at street art",
She'd often build a brick wall in her backyard and paint murals on them, inspired by the creative works in her sketchbook, only this time I'm invited.
"Oh no! If only I had a teacher", I joked,
"Relax!", Susie smiled, "You add some artistic flair to my murals",
That wasn't entirely wrong, trying to replicate Susie's abstract work seemed like an impossible task, the flourish of colour and mismatched shapes danced on the bricks.
"It's been difficult without mom", she sighed, her spray paint still hissing away,
"Dad has to work all the time to keep us going which means he doesn't have a lot for me",
She yanked off her face mask, suddenly stopping the hissing spray,
"I want to find the killer so bad, I'll never forget walking into my house and seeing her on the ground, torn open. I don't think Frank will change that, he's too full of himself to care that much",
Susie wasn't crying, only a deadly look rested in her eyes, quickly transforming into a sincere smile,
"I'm glad you're my friend, you can be there when no one else can", she whispered. The 6 feet between us closed by misfired paint.
"Anyway! Anyway, no more mushy shit, tell me about that date!",
I guess I should've seen that coming, I didn't want to tell Susie anything just yet, but according to her gossip flies faster than light.
"OK! Damn, you're like a dog sometimes",
The night felt perfect, the air slightly moist but the temperature perfectly normal, neither humid or hot. After a while of deciding, I settled on a movie date. It felt bland but starting simple felt like the right thing to ease into our relationship, we're only 18 after all.
Lovers of the Damned, would she even like this movie? Julie was definitely into some intense stuff, I thought back to some past memories with her of contemplating the afterlife and what could would happen after we die if we got hit by a car or something. Would we keep those broken bones? Those ruptured organs, what ever disease we might've died with, death really is an enigma you could waste your life thinking about. I try not to dwell on it.
I felt a light slender tap on my shoulder, like a cloud falling on my shoulders,
"Surprise", Julie's shy eyes glinted in the neon lights of the cinema, it was even better than back at the cafe. Black silk top with dark ripped jeans, the makeup was new too,
"Wow, I didn't think you'd go all out for a guy like me",
Julie giggled at my remark,
"It's not my first rodeo, but I felt like I really needed to impress my special someone this time",
"Who is he? I'll kill him",
It was a good break from all the crazy shit that'd happened to me recently, so much blood and danger, replaced with someone I loved.
"Lovers of the Damned? Never heard of it but I'm open to something new", Julie said, staring at the movies poster between of a Greek god and a mortal woman.
"Remind you of anything?", I chuckled sarcastically,
"What, you're a god now are you?", she laughed, "Don't stress Joey, it'll never be forbidden for you to see me",
She winked as we walked into the cinema, is that flirting? Oh god I wasn't prepared for this. What do I say? Do I need to say anything? Crap.
The whispers through the ads were a mixture of emotion while Julie and I giggled about what the movie could entail, and what cheesy garbage we might feed our eyeballs. It was about the prince of hell who met the love of his life at a party before being sent into solitary by his father, then trying to escape before the monsters of Tartarus send him straight back,
"Zagreus, take my hand!", the character yelled. He was moments away from being sucked away by a whirlwind of fire,
"Diana, I love you, but I can't make it",
"Please Zag, I believe in you, reach for my hand!"
Long story short he did, and they made out. It was essentially a really intense soap opera, which is absolutely goddamn amazing,
"The part where Zagreus shoved his sword in a monster and used it as a trampoline", Julie was hysterical, "God that was dumb",
"Of course, everyone knows the first date is about laughing our ass off", I retorted, "This movie helped a bunch with that might I add",
"Well, um, Joey I'm really happy you took me here tonight, means a lot to me",
Julie's dad pulled up to the curb as planned.
"I'll see you soon I hope", she smiled, opening the car door.
The wind whistled around us flicking our hair through the wind, I could feel hesitation flying around us as Julie looked back at me.
She kissed me, she ran up and kissed me. I smiled as she waved to me from the car window, driving steadily into the distance.
"Wow, it sounds perfect!", Susie squealed, jumping on the spot,
"It was, or at least that's what I think, I haven't actually heard from Julie since last night",
The atmosphere was happy again, a good date story never went wrong with her.
"Hmm, I just thought, has Julie even told Frank she left him", it was a good question, one I didn't have the answer to.
"Yeah, I should ask her about that, but why would he care. After hitting her like that and all",
Susie suddenly looked deep in thought, like she'd just come to a realization.
"You're right! Why would he care, when we so conveniently needed his help", she looked at me with a serious glare,
"You have to be joking, Frank? No way your mom would die to a teenager",
"I don't think he's that far into madness, but there's no way he's told us everything", she said,
My phone jingled and sent a chill down my spine,
SmoothFM: My place tomorrow night, Legion stuff.
I locked eyes with Susie, maybe she was right, but there was only one way to find out,
Behold our Bloody Destiny.
