"Are we there yet?", Susie drawled.
It wasn't hard to relate, we'd easily been driving for an hour with no signs of the store, just the small houses and barren superstores,
"We'll be there soon, I promise", Frank drawled, clearly annoyed.
The moon was begging to center, midnight, it made my heart jump. We might actually catch the guy tonight, I hadn't thought about how to tell Frank we made an alliance behind his back, or what he'd want to do instead.
The old truck passed over what felt like the billionth ridge, the store finally showing itself,
"Holy shit, finally!", Julie celebrated, she'd been in a dazed slumber for a decent half of the trip.
I tried not to laugh to loud, it was midnight after all.
Frank pulled over around the side of the building, intense focused on the shop windows,
"You know they've got some neat stuff in here", he turned back to face everyone with a sly grin,
"I'm sure they won't mind if we take a few things along the way",
"Come on Frank", Susie groaned, "Let's just find the guy and get out of here",
She put her mask on, rushing to get out the door,
"Someones eager, we should catch up before we're in the dust",
His mask looked scarier this time and I couldn't quite put my finger on why.
The side door creaked open, revealing a dusty storage room full to the brim with essential tools and other random nick nacks people who are old enough to use the term nick nacks would have a lot of,
"Shit", Frank whispered peering out the door, "I think the place is empty",
"Frank, isn't that a good thing?", I asked,
"Not this time it isn't, means our guy ain't here",
He rushed out to the cash register ripping bright green bills from the slots,
"But hey, they're dumb enough to leave their cash here",
"Dammit Frank", Julie said angrily, "We can't steal cash like this, it's not how we-",
"NO!", Frank screamed, vibrating with anger, "That's my choice to make, I did pull us all together after all. I make the plans. It's time I pay myself for it",
Yikes, this is my fault isn't it, now they can't even be friends anymore.
Julie retreated backward in shock from his outburst, crossing her arms and sighing,
Quicker than my head could turn hands suddenly grabbed Julie from the darkness, covering her mouth to muffle her screams,
"not empty, NOT EMPTY!", Susie panicked, dropping to the ground. I felt a hand on my own arm,
"Help me out here Joey, from the front, now", Frank whispered, pushing me into the scuffle and running into the dark. I'd never been in a damn fight before, what was I supposed to do?
On instinct I threw the strongest punch I could, my gloved hand barely knocking him off Julie. It wasn't long before he was rushing at me full force.
A scream rippled through the air, my mask had a red hue staining in the eyes, Frank stabbed him. Holy shit he stabbed him.
The man collapsed to the floor holding his leaking shoulder, a cleaner, he was only working late,
"This is him", Frank said, reaching down and pulling the bandanna from his pants pocket. Raising it like he was trying to show the world,
"Now there's just one thing left", he threw an assortment of knives on the floor. One similar to his for Julie, a curved karambit for me and a butterfly knife for Susie,
"Finish the job",
I could hear Susie sniffle underneath her mask. I couldn't be sure how close she was to an attack,
"Frank", I spoke sternly, "This is insane", I could almost feel the rage seeping out of his mask. He was going into a frenzy.
"DO IT! Or we'll never be truly done with this damn game he put us through",
Another scream echoed through the room as Julie put her knife through his stomach, pulling it out quickly as she backed off.
"All of you, just once",
The cleaner made eye contact with me, begging for mercy,
"I'm sorry", I whispered, causing another scream in the process.
Susie bent down after me, her hands shaking as she moved her knife to his stomach,
"Here", Frank sounded different as he said that, "Let me help you",
He wrapped his hands around Susie's softly, moving the knife to the cleaners neck and slowly inserting it, the last scream being the cleaners dying words.
Susie got up, leaving the knife in the pool of red that was once human,
"Frank", she whispered, wiping away her tears,
"You killed her didn't you",
No, are you kidding? This was not the time for that, he'd kill her on the spot,
"I, don't know what you're talking about, we're done, we got him", He replied a little to shakily,
"Did we?", she pulled off her mask showing a sign of anger, "Then why is her damn brush charm. ON THIS KNIFE!",
Susie ripped the butterfly knife from the cleaners neck, sure enough, the heart of Aphrodite lay chained on the wooden handle. A little more red than it should be.
"She was my best target you know", his tone was very different this time, almost unrecognizable,
"But I couldn't have any loose ends, it took so long to plan out killing the three of you", He laughed, the mask making more sense every second,
"But my god, this moment might actually top it",
He gave us a quirky salute,
"I'll see you on the flip side, but don't worry, I've still got more up my sleeve",
He grabbed the shelf by him, pulling it down, making a cloud of compost ingredients and fertilizer,
"Frank! Get back here!", I coughed through the fog.
It was to late, I could hear his rust bucket car start outside and drive off, of course he did it. Nobody else is insane enough. His entire persona is discordance, and he will pay for it.
