Maxon POV

A few days after my name was announced, random people from the palace barged in our house and started taking measurements for suits, going down the rules and preparing for the Selection and meeting the 'legendary' princess. I didn't have a second to myself always rushed or in the middle of something or the other.

The day before we were supposed to travel to Angeles, this weird lanky man with slicked back hair came to our house. Me mom and May sat at the kitchen table with him. He began talking about the rules. "Yes, so I think you are familiar with these rules and if I may can you please wait outside whilst I talk to your brother? There are some 'ahem' confidential things I would like to talk about, if you don't mind," he said gesturing towards May. She was a bit stubborn but Mom forced her to leave. Immediately he began. "Mr. Singer as you already know, the princess tends to have temperamental feelings at times. She has not come in contact with many males her age and will be hesitant. She has even personally requested to convey a special message to all the Selected. "Her Royal Highness" I almost snorted at the very royal and formal addressing.  " Her Royal Highness will NOT take nor accept any kind of abusive advancement and if such is enacted by any young man then he will immediately be eliminated from the Selection. Also you may not approach her at any time unless she calls for you. The third floor is restricted from the Selected and you may not visit the princess in her room. Will you promise to follow these rules with respect to the Royal Family?" He stared at me with piercing black eyes. "Of-of Course I promise." I stuttered and stumbled over my words for no reason. "Well that's settles then and of course we have been sent to ask 1 more important question." I waited in the dead silence that ensued for what could be so confidential that even May's ears were not fit for. "Are you a virgin or not? I specifically need you to answer honestly." This is the King's order and you must be a virgin in order to compete for the princess's hand," he asked in such a casual manner that I wondered whether he knew what he was talking about. I was so taken aback that when I moved my mouth no words came out. My mother took care of it for me.

"Of course he is sir, he has never been in relation with anyone I can firmly assure you," my mother said quite sternly as though she expected this question to follow. "Then my work here is done. You will be escorted to the airport tomorrow and we expect you to wear the given suit," he said, wishing me luck for the Selection that seemed foreboding now.

America POV

I got up today with a slight feeling of dread, knowing that my so called suitors would arrive. I was eager to get to know them and anxious at the thought of having to converse and spend time with men who could easily hurt me or even lead me on. To match my very unusual mixture of feelings I donned a lilac dress highlighting my hair was bunched up in a messy bun by Lucy who was the only one present as I had let Anne and Mary take a day off.

I set off to mother's room as she had requested me to come as soon I as I was ready. I hurried over and knocked. "Come on in dear," her voice rang out knowing it was me. I went in and saw my mother sitting in an elegant red dress her hair lying down, yet to be styled. As always she was beautiful unlike me with my pale skin and lanky red hair. I did not inherit any of my father's genes physically except for my 'renowned' temperament. From my mom however, I only got the shape of my slender body and her mouth and nose. "America, from today on the palace will be filled with new guests for the Selection. And I wanted to tell you that whatever you are feeling is perfectly normal. When I was in the Selection all your father did was spend time with all the ladies and got to know them and who he had tender feelings for," she said sighing with emotion. All that ran through my mind was how could my father love and be loved. I bit back on my lip from saying something I'd regret. "You shall do the same and let us see who will be the One," she said calmly. I turned to leave when "Oh and America? Please do not frighten the young men on their first impression," she said with a tinge of humor in her voice. "Of course Mom. How could a delicate young woman like me do such a thing?" I said and hurried out the door before she could retort.

Maxon POV

The day finally arrived and I stood leaning against the door frame in my casual suit whilst the rest of my family bustled around in excitement. Then May walked or rather ran towards me with a flower in hand. "Maxon! Maxon! I am so excited for you! Here, put this in your pocket, the lily as a mark that you are from the best province in all of Illea, Carolina," she said dramatically. With a ridiculously grand flourish she placed the flower. "Thanks May," I said affectionately. I truly loved her very much. She turned to right the vase she had tipped over. I went over gently turned her around and gave her a tight hug. She hugged me back and said "Maxon, you're the best brother I could have and even though Kota hurt us all you brought us back up cause you are truly better than him. If the princess can't see that then I don't know if she has her senses about her," May said chuckling, when I gave her a playful punch in the arms. I was grateful to have such a loving family even if they do pull at me at times.

We were all standing outside awaiting the transport, when a sleek black limousine appeared. A short stocky man stepped out and gestured to me to get in whilst and thin, gangly little boy hurried forward to pick my small bag. I was shocked at the grandeur the Royal Family was exposing. The mayor spoke of my well being and luck for the Selection to the crowd that had gathered. I got in the limo and turned to the window to wave farewell to my family. Mom stood in tears and May was jumping up and down, Gerad simply waved and Dad looked on pride glowing from his eyes. Then the car swept down the lane and off I was to the palace.

Upon arriving at the airport I met two young men standing there waiting for me and the other person. "Hello I am --- "Yes yes you must be Maxon Singer from Carolina, I just memorized all the Selected names so that explains why I know. Oh and I am Carter Woodwork from Carolina." He said in a speed rush. "Well I can see that someone is excited for the Selection," I said. "I am indeed. I also think that you and would be close friends. By the way this here is James Brouillette  from Allens." he said gesturing towards the shorter man next to him. "Nice to meet you James." He simply nodded and went over to speak to the guard standing near. Following my confused gaze Carter simply said, " Don't mind him he is just a bit shy." Saying that he sat down on the plush couches. Suddenly a very handsome man waltzed whom I recognized as the haughty Two from Clermont, Brian Newsome. The moment he came we were all ushered in to the boarding room and took our seats in the roomy flight. I knew then and there that there was no turning back at this and that I had to charm the princess along with 35 other men.  😒
