Rye's head hit the trunk of a tree and he bit down hard.
But now he was able to get a glimpse of his dragger. It was Haley.
"Are you trying to get us both killed?" she asked in a sharp whisper.
He just looked at her in confusion, not daring to speak. She pulled him off the ground by the collar of his shirt until they were face to face. His feet were off the ground as she was several inches taller than him.
"You idiot." she cried with a scowl still with her whisper, she let go of his shirt.
When his feet hit the ground he began to back away, not sure what exactly she was talking about.
"Don't you even think about it." she said, "leaving now will only get you killed sooner rather than later, especially considering..." she drifted off, her face hardened.
Rye finally got his words to work, "w-what?"
She shot him a look and put her finger to her lip signaling him to shut up or be shut up. He took the former.
Suddenly, Haley hit the dirt and pulled Rye down with her.
Then out of nowhere, something came out of the forest around them, a knife embedded itself in the tree where just seconds ago Rye was standing.
He saw Haley lunge and the next thing he knew she had a boy in a chokehold.
Rye assumed he had been the one who had thrown the knife.
Before the boy could struggle, Haley moved her arms in one quick movement, Rye heard a loud crack, as the boy fell limply to the ground next to him.
This had happened in mere seconds and if Rye had been alone there was no way he would be alive right then.
Haley had a far-off look in her eyes, as a canon went off in the destiny, but she quickly recovered. Getting on her hand and knees, she quickly began to search the boy's pack on the ground.
In it, she found a rope, a canteen (no water, just the canteen because it can't be that easy), one bandage, and a small container of dried fruit.
She got up and went over to the tree that had been hit with the knife and removed it.
"You coming?" She asked, sounding like she couldn't care less.
"Wait, you want us to be allies?"
"Don't think of it as an alliance as much as you can't physically serve one day without me and I don't plan on killing you right away," she said very matter-of-factly. Then began to walk in the opposite direction then the boy had come from.
Rye had never seen a dead body before, very injured and close to death, sure, but never like this. The young boy, who couldn't have been much older than himself, lying dead, his body still warm and his eyes wide open.
Rye recognized him now he was the boy from 2 a career as he had heard people in the training arena call him a kid who was to be feared. But Rye only felt sorrow as he left the boy to be collected by the aircraft to be delivered to his family in a wooden box as everyone else cheered on his killer.
It was self-defense, at least he hoped it was. Because if not Rye was willingly in the company of a psychotic killer and that he thought that would only end in horror.
