The rain poured down on them with a rush of violence, barely a second between each clap of thunder. The skies were a dark gray, no stars or moon to be seen. The waves crashed onto the beach in large and rocky waves, the waters would be unsurvivable right now. Every so often flashes of lightning would appear, lighting up the skies. Alexa sat huddled on the wet sand, hunching her face into her jacket as the storm continued. Every time she looked up, the rain would come and slap her on the face with the relentless downpour. She jumped as a loud boom of thunder vibrated through her skull, crying out. The girls were crowded together on the beach, all of them yelling and screaming throughout the storm. Despite all the different weather from where they've lived, none of them had experienced this type of storm before. Even if they had, there had always been some form of shelter. But now, it was man against nature.
"Ah! Please make it stop!" Martha shouted. Her hood was covering her head, but Alexa doubted that was doing anything. Everyone was soaked to the bone. Shelby ran over to the girl and huddled next to her before covering the two with a jacket. Luckily the storm didn't come with cold weather, the hot humidity still remained. Dot was running around and grabbing the items they needed from flying into the storm.
"I used to think storms were majestic!" Leah shouted over the wind. She was on her knees and hiding a book under her jacket. Alexa couldn't see the title.
"That still your take?!" Rachel screamed furiously.
Leah struggled to pull her hood back over her head as the wind tore it off. "No!" She shouted.
Dot went over to the large left-over flotation device from the plane crash. She picked it up, dragging it over to the group. "All right! Come on! Everybody, grab an end! Get under!" Everyone dragged themselves out of there sheltering before running over to the new and slightly-improved shelter. "Leah come on! Get under!" Dot shouted when she noticed the girl straggling behind. Everyone sat in a line under the piece of plastic, using one hand to hold up the 'roof'. Alexa found herself squished between Toni and Rachel as the storm continued.
"How's your ankle?!" Shelby asked Martha over the storm. The two were at the other side of the line, and Alexa was barely able to hear them as the storm continued to rage.
"It's better! It's just so itchy!" She told the group.
"My leg is kinda itchy, too." Leah revealed.
"Mine too." Shleby told them.
"Sand fleas." Dot told the group. Alexa's eyes widened and she looked at the others. Thankfully she did not feel itchy yet, just cold and miserable and uncomfortable. But not itchy.
"Sand what?!" Fatin asked in a low and threatening voice. This seemed like the worst news yet.
"Sand fleas!" Dot told the girl. Fatin let out a no in denial.
"Well they're not really like fleas. They're more like tiny little shrimp."
"No." She repeated. Alexa let out a laugh and watched as the girls near her looked at her like she was insane. She just shrugged and continued to giggle at Fatin's self denial. Alexa watched as Toni scratched her leg a bit made sure to plant her body parts far away from that area.
"They're not lethal, just annoying. Once the rain stops we can just go scrub them off, you know before they get the chance to burrow." Dot told the group. Alexa quickly stopped laughing and cringed at the thought of tiny little creatures burrowing under her skin.
"Ugh!" Fatin let out a disgusted scream. She went from under the covers and screamed out to the wind. "Fuck my life!" She screamed out into the wind. The girls yelled at her and pulled her back under the cover of the giant plastic shelter. She continued to scream in disgust as she did so. The storm went on for hours, and they just waited. Alexa felt helpless. To be fair, she was helpless.
