Alexa felt a rough shake on her shoulders. She woke up and blinked at the brightness. Two figures stood above her, standing in the stance that showed they were annoyed. She closed her eyes for a second and let them focus so she would be able to see now. Slowly opening them again, she noticed that the two figures were Dot and Rachel. Everyone seemed to be getting up around the same time. "What do you sleep like a rock or something?" Dot asked incredudously. Alexa brain seemed off to a slow start because it took her a good twenty seconds to respond. Slowly she stretched her back and sat up into the pretzel position.
"Um, what?" She asked. Oh God. She really was an idiot.
Dot just rolled her eyes and looked at her again. "We said your name and literally shouted in your ear. Thought you were dead or something." Alexa frowned and thought about her sleep time. She sighed when she realized she didn't have the slightest memory or incantation of what they were talking about. Her disorder was getting worse because she didn't have her medication.
"Yeah. My parents have to touch me to wake me up." She didn't say anything else. She had just met these people, and she wasn't going to talk to them about something that was personal. Not to mention it's been a day, so surely they were sending out search parties. They would be found soon and she would never have to experience another day on this island. The morning weather was dreary. Not a single blue spot in the sky, and everything was cloudy. The wind rustled her long blonde hair, but it was humid enough not to be cold. Just a weird moist heat. She looked around at everyone who looked just as annoyed to be awake as she was.
Shelby scanned everyone on the beach. "Six... Seven. Seven, we're missing someone."
"Leah." Rachel realized. Everyone looked around them to spot the girl. As if on cue, someone came from around the rocks. Leah approached, wearing the same clothes as yesterday (everyone was to be fair), and holding an object in her hand. When she got closer, she could see that it was a phone. A real phone. They could call someone. And yet, Leah's face told a different story. It was one of sadness, and maybe... guilt?
Everyone dragged themselves out of sleep mode and crowded around the girl.
"It was in her pocket. I heard it ringing, but it didn't seem real, not that anything does anymore. I followed the sound, and I... uh..." She trailed off with an empty and detached look on her face.
"You frisked a dead body." Dot said bluntly, like she was disappointed in Leah. Her face showed one of disgust, and almost an angry shock that Leah would do something so... morbid. Leah nodded.
"But then, when I finally dug it out of her pocket, it died in my hands." Her voice broke and she seemed very dissapointed. Everyone looked heartbroken, because that was their way off the island. They didn't have any form of direct communication now. "The weirdest thing is, this is her second phone. The other one, we lost out in the water, but this... this is an entirely different one. One that worked, and one she decided not to tell us about. Isn't there something like... vaguely messed up about that. Like not even vaguely, deeply."
"Let me see it." Fatin said holding out her hand from beside Leah. "It is kind of a sketchy phone." She said when she got a closer look at it.
"So what exactly are we tryna' say here?" Shelby asked. Alexa was pretty sure that the girl knew what the other's were implying but her issues with saying something against a dead person were overiding her common sense ability.
"I don't know."
"I don't know."
Alexa knew that they knew what they were trying to imply.
"I'm just wondering if the simplest explanation might be the right one." Shelby said, trying to be sensible. "So she had two phones. It's not that crazy. And she'd been knocked around so bad, she just... she probably just forgot. Jeanette wasn't just in shock you know. She was dying." The blonde adressed the group in a defensive manner, which Alexa could understand. Alexa truly didn't know Jeanette (the two said maybe three sentences to each other) but she didn't seem like a terrible person. Definitely not one to... be somehow involved in the plane crash.
