My head dangles limply to the side. I don’t even have the strength to lift it up. My eyelids are weighed down with lead, and my body feels like concrete.  I hear voices, loudly celebrating. My mother’s is the most jovial of all.

I swim back into consciousness. My eyes can open now, and I lift my pounding head. I am sitting in the middle of my old bed room, but it is so much more different. My once comfy bed is replaced by a cot, and the dresser has been substituted for a small, metal box. The windows are boarded up, and the unfamiliar chair I am sitting on hurts my bum. I stand, to discover I have no bonds. I am free to move around. I start to walk and the ground rushes to meet my face.

I catch myself before I face plant. I raise myself to a sitting position and my head spins. I crawl to the door and wiggle the knob. It’s unlocked, but something on the other side keeps it from opening. I notice a dog door at the bottom. I push the flap and I hear a beeping in response. I scramble away from the door. A minute later, I hear a clink and the door opens. Mariette Victoire Greg saunters in.

Also known as my mother.

I keep my face calm, cool, and collected as she leans forward and plants a soft, red kiss on my forehead. “I missed my baby girl,” she purrs. A cold chill runs down me. “But you’ve been a very bad girl,” She runs a perfectly manicured finger down my face gently, before slapping me across the cheek. My face burns and weeps blood as her nails cut into my skin. I still show no emotion. She pouts.

“Aw, won’t you give your mummy a smile?” I stare at her with unchanging eyes. “Fine…” She sighs. She sways her hips on her way out of the door. It closes with a definite click. I start to shake with fear. I allow myself a few quiet, shuddering gasps. I resume my composition quickly.

A minute later, the door swings open. My perfect façade is broken by the person standing in the door.

“Jason…” I breathe.
