You leaned back in class, but only slightly though. Sunlight shone through the window, with trees hanging just below the window. You could see other students in their free period stretched out on the field of grass below. You usually zoned out in literacy class, seeing as you were the Ultimate Novelist (Toko was the Ultimate Writing Prodigy), you knew everything there was to writing. The only time you considered literacy class important was when you heard—
"Today, you will be put in a Group of three a group project." You looked away from the window to the teacher up front, who was looking down at a clip board while the other students whistled and cheered. You could feel one pair of eyes on you, a pair that you had never liked: You turned around to see Leon Kuwata, the Ultimate Baseball Star, in all his might, staring at you smugly with a cyan gaze. You rolled your eyes at him.
"Before you get too excited," The teacher looked up from her clipboard, "I'm picking who you're with." You let out a sigh of relief. Maybe you wouldn't have to put up with Leon's prideful and snide attitude towards others.
"First up: Leon Kuwata with Kiyotaka Ishimaru and Y/N L/N," The teacher went on with listing other groups.
Your relief was washed away by dread as Leon came over with a huge smirk on his face (before ya'll @ me, I do like Leon as a character, but for the sake of the story, he's gonna be a jerk). He sat uncomfortably close to you, and you could feel his hand sneak around to your waist.
"Well hello there," The redhead pulled you close, and you resisted the urge to slap him across the face. "Mind if I—"
"Absolutely not!" Two hands grabbed Leon's shoulders, pulling him and his chair away from you. Ishimaru grabbed another chair not far away and sat on it firmly.
"No affection in class, Leon," Ishimaru growled. You grinned. He hasn't changed a single bit. You remembered going to school with Ishimaru when he was younger: He had been the only one at their ragtag school to believe in the rules, and was looked down upon as a result. Somehow, you had always shown up at the right times to save his ass from being beaten up too badly.
Thanks, You mouthed to Ishimaru, and the black haired boy nodded in return. The teacher droned on about the project, and even though you loved writing, you were glad once the bell went. Gotta get Leon off my ass before he ruins my appetite.
"Y/N!" You heard Aoi calling after you. Spotting your friend, sitting with Kirigiri and Chihiro, you put a finger to your lips as you quickly got some food and sat down beside the swimmer and the others.
"Jeez, Aoi!" You cried. "I'm sorry to be buggy, but what did I say about calling out my name when there's no doubt Leon's around?"
Aoi rolled her eyes playfully. "That it's like ringing the dinner bell," Aoi recited the words you had told her many times. "Or something like that."
"I dunno about the bell, but I can see my dinner!" You groaned with annoyance. Too late. Aoi mouthed an apology and you nodded as Leon sat down beside you, pressing up against you as if he were special to you. You rolled your eyes at this and gave him a hard kick in the shins. Leon yelped and held it, then looked up at you.
"Now, about that dinner...?" As Leon dived for your face, Ishimaru grabbed his head and reared him back. You smiled gratefully at the black haired boy as, once again, he sat between you two. You noticed that he was much further away from you than Leon was. Finally, someone who knows what personal space is!Time skip because I can't be bothered—
As you exited the class, someone called your name.
"For the last time, Leon—" You turned around, ready to slap the obnoxious teenager across the face, only to see a concerned looking Ishimaru. "Sorry!" You put your hands up in surrender. "Automatic response at the end of the day."
"That's fine," Ishimaru smiled. "I was actually wondering if you wanted me to walk you to your dorm? Asahina told me Leon's dorm isn't far from yours, so I got a little worried, considering how he seemed to be treating you."
"Of course!" You waved your hand for Ishimaru to follow you. "Plus, we could start on the project without having to interact with Leon!"Your dorm wasn't really different from others, apart from a couple of spelling bee trophies and some of your novels that won big-time awards. You looked over at Ishimaru, who was looking around curiously.
"Sorry about the mess," You smiled politely, kicking a couple of shirts under your bed to clear a workspace on the oak floor. Ishimaru sat down and nodded. "So..." You sat down beside him and tapped your knees. "Where to start..."A couple of hours later, you and Ishimaru figured out what you guys wanted to to, alsong figuring that if Leon didn't like it, he could go on his lonesome and fail writing class. As you and Ishimaru typed on a doc you two shared on seperate computers (Ishimaru had gone to get his before they started), you noticed the raven haired boy's head starting to droop, his eyes looking dull and bags starting to form under his eyes. You poked his shoulder softly.
"You okay there bud?" You asked him as he sat up straight looking startled.
"Hm?" He blinked sleepily, then waved his hand. "Don't worry about it, N/N. I've pulled many all-nighters for assignments." You leaned back, continuing with the project but also keeping an eye on your friend, who still looked like he could drop at any moment. As you and Ishimaru finished the first chapter, he leaned to the side and you caught him before he could hit his head. You smiled, watching his chest rise and fall in a mesmerising rhythm, brushing his flopping hair from his soft-looking face. Stop it, Y/N! You shook your head, laying your classmate's head onto your lap. He's your friend. Nothing else. You had been wondering what it would be like if you and Ishimaru were a thing for a little bit now, but you had quickly brushed the thoughts away. He didn't seem like the type looking for a relationship, anyway. Still, as you looked down at his softened features as he slept, you decided to let him stay that way. You didn't have the heart to wake him up. You rested his head gently on the floor and turned out the light, turning on your lamp and reaching for a spare pillow and blanket. You lifted Ishimaru's head and put the pillow underneath, stretching your special star blanket across him. You did the same for yourself, laying close to your best friend and falling asleep to the scent of cologne.
