Alexandra POV
We drove for 3 days and ended up in a small motel about an hour outside of Columbus, Ohio, where we spent the night. We repeated that same process for almost 2 months straight. Drive for what felt like forever stop at a motel for the night, switch cars, and then leave again. It was miserable. I didn't understand for a while why we had to do this, why we had to leave home.
The months passed painfully slow, but as soon as August arrived I wanted nothing more than for it to go away again.
Mom and I were eating dinner silently at a motel. There was no noise other than the quiet chewing. "You are gonna go back," she said looking up at me breaking the silence.
I looked up from my plate of food "What?" I asked confused.
"I have been thinking about what you were gonna do for school and I decided you are gonna go back home to Aunt Mia and do it there. I have already talked to Mia and she is fine with it" she said as she took another bite of her food.
"Why can't I stay with you?" I questioned putting my fork down.
"Because we are never in the same place for more than 24 hours and I can't teach you while I drive" she explained.
"We can do it at night" I tried to reason.
"There isn't enough time for that. I have made up my mind. You have to go back" she said sadly. I sighed and looked down at my food knowing there was no point in arguing. "I know it is gonna be hard for you, it will be just as hard for me. I am so sorry I wish there was another way" she reasoned.
It was silent for a few moments before I looked up and asked "When do I go back?".
"We are gonna head for L.A. in the morning" she answered.
It was quiet for a moment before I spoke up, "If it is alright with you I am gonna go ahead and go to bed".
"Yeah whatever you want, baby... I love you" she said as I stood up from the table.
"Love you too, Mom" I responded before walking away.
Three days later Mom and I pulled up in front of the café we had been at just months ago. "I love you," I said as I unbuckled my seatbelt.
"I love you too I will see you too," Mom said as I climbed out of the car and grabbed my suitcase and backpack. I walked towards the front door but turned around and looked at my Mom one last time before she put her car in reverse. I knew she couldn't stay long with the chance of her getting caught by the cops but it still hurt to see her leave.
I turned around and walked into the café with the suitcase rolling behind me.
"Aunt Mia?" I yelled.
Her head popped out of the backroom my Dad always worked.
I ran into her arms and we hugged, "I missed you so much" I stated.
"I missed you too, angel" she replied, "Come on let's get you home," she said as she led me to her car outside.
Pulling into the driveway after all this time was bittersweet. When we went inside it felt like no time had passed, no furniture was moved. There were no new decorations, almost nothing had changed. My room was exactly as I had left it right down to the race car track that was still set up in the middle of the floor.
Aunt Mia started homeschooling a few days after I arrived. Mom would call once a week but other than that I never heard from her. Dad, Uncle Leon, and Uncle Vince never called and no one knew where any of them were so there was no way to talk to them. The year went by slowly I turned seven in the late fall and continued to count down the days till summer vacation.
