After Mrs. Morrison left me and Dustin in the kitchen together, Dustin turned to me with a casual smile that never seemed to leave his face and kicked his feet up onto the chair.
"You're the girl I met on the bus last year, aren't you?" asked Dustin, and I nodded, as a small blush crept onto my cheeks.
"What are the odds?" Laughed Dustin. I cracked a smile and wrote on the notepad again.
I know right. Sorry for never calling you, it's not like I didn't think you were cute or anything. I caught feelings for someone right after meeting you, and I didn't think it was right.
Dustin nodded, a smile still etched upon his face. "It's okay, I ended up getting a boyfriend about a week later, and I'm still with him to this day."
I raised my eyebrows in surprise. "Boyfriend?" I thought.
"I don't put labels on who I like, I just like people," said Dustin, looking at the surprised expression on my face. "You're not homophobic or anything, right?"
I let out a small snort and shook my head.
Absolutely not. My friends Blaise and Penny are gay, and Daphne's bisexual. If I were to be homophobic, I'd be a shit friend. I could never hate someone because they like the same gender :)
He grinned. "Great. Say, did you find any loooove over the past year?" Teased Dustin.
The second he said that I immediately thought about Cedric. Then guilt suddenly washed over me.
"You really thought of Cedric instead of Draco? You're an awful girlfriend," said my conscience, and I fought back a sigh.
Yeah, I have a boyfriend. I've been dating him since March.
"Ooooh," said Dustin with a teasing smile. "Was he the person you caught feelings for in July?"
I felt a small pang in my heart and shook my head.
That was Cedric. We dated for a few months before I broke up with him and he got with his current girlfriend.
"Oh, wow," said Dustin, the smile wiping off of his face. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't imagine losing..."
His voice trailed off.
It's just a shock. Besides, I'm friends with his current girlfriend and my sister is his sister's best friend. I can't imagine how devastated they'll be when they find out...
"Were you two close?" asked Dustin.
We were on good terms. Like...very good terms. I had just had a long chat with him less than 48 hours ago about what we want to do once we graduate. And now...
"He had an entire life ahead of him. Now he's dead, and it's all your fault," said my conscience. I choked down a sob and let out a small sigh as I felt a hot lump rising in my throat.
"I'm sorry for bringing it up," said Dustin.
It's okay, you didn't know. Besides, I needed to let that off my chest, so thank you.
"Are you sure?" asked Dustin.
I nodded. I decided that it was a time for a change in subject to a lighter one.
Your mom is so nice.
That put the grin back onto Dustin's face. "I know right, she's the best," said Dustin. "She's got to be the most caring, optimistic person I know. I think I get my smile from her—I'm always smiling for some reason, as is she."
