Jason's POV
Jason Grace had been bothered by Tina Duncan's presence ever since he saw her on her first dinner at Camp Half-blood. It wasn't because Lou Ellen revealed that Tina has a huge crush on Jason.
He had been bothered by her even before that. It started the moment he saw her in the dim fire light of the dining pavilion. The way she walked with her chin up, her hair tied in a tight ponytail and her hand casually draped on the hilt of her dagger that hung on her hip. And her scrutinizing stare as she looked at everyone gathered for dinner.
Despite having a completely different face, her actions and stares reminded Jason of someone he knew back in Camp Jupiter.
....
Two years ago...
Jason Grace was walking along the Via Principalis while clutching his wounded right arm from the war games when he heard uproars from the mess hall. At first he thought someone was fighting over the outcome of the war games earlier since the Fourth Cohort had won.
He dashed towards the commotion, expecting to see two centurions wringing each other's neck while the legionnaires are forming a circle around them to cheer them on. But he was surprised to see everyone seated on their chairs like civilized people, clapping their hands and cheering on someone who had just walked into the mess hall from the other side.
Jason squeezed himself through the crowd and saw that the person everyone was cheering on is a girl with long brown hair tied in a ponytail, gray eyes, armor barely grazed from battle and her stature as confident as a bull in a bullring.
"Who would've thought that a mere daughter of Hecate would be that good?" a taunting female voice said beside him. He didn't need to look at her to know that it was Reyna Ramirez-Arellano, daughter of Bellona.
"I'm guessing you didn't like that she won?"
"Her cohort won." Reyna said, gritting her teeth. "She didn't win on her own."
"Does it hurt?" Jason worriedly said, pointing at the big gash on her stomach. "She did that, right?"
"It's just a scratch."
"Did you get it check? It's still bleeding."
"I'm fine, Jason." she muttered in a serious tone. "Aren't you a little bit angry that she won like that?"
"Why would I be?" he said in a dubious tone. "She won fair and square. Everyone in the legion knows it. That's why they're cheering for her like that."
"But she's a daughter of Hecate." Reyna said in an almost a disgusted tone. "She's almost as bad as a graecus scum."
"She's a child of Rome, Reyna." Jason firmly said. "She's been here for almost two years and she's proven her loyalty to the legion more than once."
"You've been keeping tabs on her?"
"No, I'm not." Jason defensively said as he stared at the girl in front of them being handed with large portions of meat and a basket of fruit. "Everyone just knows the name Christina Davenport around here."
...
Christina Davenport. He thought as he stared at Tina Duncan. They don't look the same and they have different names but they do share the same mother and her actions. Her eyes. They both have the same eyes and the way she glances at everyone around camp as if she's surveying which is a formidable enemy and which isn't like how Christina Davenport does it. That's what has been bothering him.
